Bruins to play for Class 4A title

CORVALLIS — Kenton Bansemer had 17 points and six rebounds to lead top-ranked Brookings-Harbor to a 55-42 win against La Grande and a spot in the OSAA Class 4A boys state championship game.

Ryan Took had 12 points for La Grande.

Brookings-Harbor (27-0) broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring La Grande 15-7 to go ahead 40-26. La Grande (15-9) got no closer than 10 in the fourth.

Brookings-Harbor will play No. 3 Central in today’s championship game after finishing second last year.

Caleb Eszlinger added 14 points and Chase Bansemer 13 for Brookings-Harbor.

Central 40, Hidden Valley 38

Third-ranked Central (20-1) held off a late charge from co-No. 5 Hidden Valley in the other semifinal.

Hidden Valley (22-4) trailed by a many as eight in the third quarter but made it a game in the fourth.

Class 4A Girls

La Pine 47, Sutherlin 42

There will be a new Class 4Agirls champion.

Sixth-ranked La Pine nearly blew a 17-point second-half lead but held on to defeat defending state champion Sutherlin in the semifinals Friday night.

La Pine (24-3) will play No. 2 Cottage Grove in today’s final.

La Pine used a 15-2 run in the third quarter to go ahead 34-17. Sutherlin hit five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. The last, by Brooklyn Norman, got the Bulldogs within one at 43-42 with 1:09 remaining.

But top-ranked Sutherlin (25-1) didn’t score again, and La Pine iced the game at the free-throw line.

Kassi Conditt led La Pine with 15 points and 17 rebounds. Sutherlin’s Tess Bennett had 13 points and four rebounds.

Cottage Grove 43, Yamhill-Carlton 34

Jordan Brunetti had 11 points, three rebounds and three steals to lead second-ranked Cottage Grove to a win in the early semifinal.

Cottage Grove (24-3) will be playing for its first state title.

Elle Anderson had eight points and 11 rebounds for Yamhill-Carlton (18-10).

Class 5A Boys

Jefferson 66, North Eugene 49

EUGENE — Terrence Jones and Tyrone Phillips scored 20 points each and No. 1 Jefferson will get a chance to defend its state title after beating North Eugene in the semifinals at McArthur Court on Friday.

The Democrats (19-6), who beat Corvallis for the championship in 2008, will play for their fifth title against Century today.

Freshman guard Demerick Taylor led the Highlanders (14-14) with 15 points off the bench.

Century 41, Wilsonville 40

Cameron McCaffery made a jumper with 1.2 seconds left and No. 8 Century (22-7) beat No. 3 Wilsonville (25-3) in the other semifinal.

McCaffery, who finished with 28 points, scored the final nine points of the game for the Jaguars.

Class 6A Boys

Lincoln 59, Central Catholic 50

 JT Flowers scored 18 points and Lincoln had four players score in double digits as the Cardinals (19-9) held off a late rally from Central Catholic (18-8)in the semifinals of the Class 6A boys tournament Friday at McArthur Court.

Jesuit 65, Grant 54

Kyle Wiltjer had 18 points, six rebounds and five blocked shots and Jesuit (24-3)dethroned defending champion Grant (20-6)Friday night.

Jesuit advances to its fourth title game in the past 10 years, after winning in 1999 and 2005 and placing second in 2002.

After falling behind by 16 points in the second quarter, the Generals got to within four with less than three minutes left after six straight points by Portland Interscholastic League player of the year Michael Moser, who scored a game-high 19 points.

On the next Grant possession, Moser drove the baseline but couldn’t finish a dunk over Wiltjer, who found a streaking Jordan Akwenuke in the open court for a fast-break dunk to go up six with 1:50 remaining that iced the win.
