An 18-year-old Bunker Hill resident is facing a murder charge after Coos County sheriff's deputies found the body of a woman Thursday at his home.
Deputies took Henry Cozad to the Coos County jail, where he is awaiting arraignment on the murder charge in the death of Linda Foley.
At about 3:16 p.m., the Coos County Sheriff's Office 911 center received an emergency call from someone at 63469 Third Road in Bunker Hill. The caller indicated a person was "down" at the location under what were described as suspicious circumstances, a Coos County District Attorney's Office press release said. Medical personnel and deputies went to the house.
Upon arrival, they found the body of Foley, who lived there and is 59 years old. The initial investigation indicated she died from "homicidal violence," the press release said.
"(That) means I'm not willing to say what the cause of death is until we have a chance to do the autopsy," said District Attorney R. Paul Frasier.
The DA wouldn't say where Foley's body was found, what condition it was in, or why law enforcement believe she was murdered.
"I can just say it was found inside the residence," he said. "I can't talk about the facts at this point."
Sheriff's Sgt. Dave Hermann said the homicidal violence refers to death at the hands of another person. He also demurred from providing details about the incident.
"This is such a unique case that we're not going to go there yet," he said.
Hermann wouldn't explain the comment except to say "With regard to the suspect that's been arrested."
"No further information will be released until Monday," Hermann added.
Foley lived at the Bunker Hill home with her boyfriend, Fred Cozad, and his son, Henry, Frasier said. He added that investigators have found two birth dates for the woman.
"Nobody seems to know which one applies," Frasier said.
During the investigation, the Sheriff's Office activated the Coos County Major Incident Team and members of the sheriff's office, the Coos Bay, North Bend, Coquille, Coquille Tribal and Powers police departments, along with Oregon State Police from Coos Bay and Roseburg offices, the South Coast Interagency Narcotics Team, the Medical Examiner's Office and the DA's office began working the case. The Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation.
Then, at about 10 p.m., deputies arrested the younger Cozad at the home. He is also listed as a Powers resident by the Coos County jail. He went to the jail on the murder charge and is being held without bail until his arraignment. Frasier noted that Henry was at the scene when deputies first arrived and remained throughout the initial investigation.
Due to the budget-prompted closure of state courts today, Monday is the soonest Cozad could be arraigned.
An autopsy on Foley's body is tentatively scheduled this weekend, possibly as early as Saturday once the pathologist returns from Portland.
Anyone with information in the case is encouraged to contact the Coos County Sheriff's Office at 396-3121, ext. 371.
