Presbyterian church moving after 57 years

Thursday, March 12, 2009 |
The First Presbyterian Church of Coos Bay is moving. After 57 years on Elrod Avenue, the congregation has sold its property to allow the city to build a fire station. The Rev. Bill Davis expects to move into the Shepherd House, owned by Emmanuel Episcopal Church, in early April.
But before then, the church wants to invite the community to a celebration of the building’s history this Sunday.
After the regular 10 a.m. service, the congregation will host an open house until 2 p.m. Musicians will get a chance to play the church’s organ and piano, tours will be offered and plenty of refreshments will be available to all.
It has been a church home to many people in the area over the years. Hundreds of children attended Sunday school, after school and youth groups there. Some were scouts sponsored by the church, others attended daycare during the 1970s. And most recently, Head Start has offered classes in the building. Thousands more have attended weddings, baptisms and funerals in the building.
The church is located at 438 Elrod Ave.
