Marshfield High School’s dance team will unveil its state routine in its annual dress rehearsal Friday night at the Pirate Palace.
The Upbeats are in the state championships next week, this year with the Class 5A small division competing at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland on Wednesday and Thursday instead of on the weekend.
The dress rehearsal starts at 7 p.m. and should last about 30 minutes. There is no admission.
During the event, the team will perform its state routine twice and also practice a drill down, in which the dancers respond to a set of commands.
This year’s competition team includes Lynsey Bibbens, Shannon Boatright, Lindsey Bunnell, Chloe Danielson, Kelsi Gaither, Kristin Laird, Andrea Meadows, Paige Molzahn, Alyssa Mulkey, Amber Owen, Miriam Rogers, Emily Woods and Sarah Woods.
The team competed Saturday at Dallas High School, finishing second in its division.
“We did well, but not well enough to win,” coach Debbie Brown said.
Crook County won the Class 5A small division with 79 points, while Marshfield had 72 and Churchill finished third with 64.
The Upbeats scored well in technique, Brown said.
“Our precision and timing were great and no one beat our projection,” she said. “Our final score was disappointing for all of us, because we felt we had performed better than the scores indicate.”
In Marshfield’s previous competition, at Churchill, the Upbeats finished third in the division with 69 points. Sheldon had 73 and Lebanon 72.
The Upbeats also had three dancers place in the drill down, with Danielson and Sarah Woods placing in the top 10 among 120 competitors in the advanced drill down and Boatright placing in the top 10 in the novice drill down among 80 competitors.
Also at Churchill, Bandon placed second among the smaller schools with a score of 61, which qualifies the Hotsteppers for both the first and second rounds of the state competition, which for Class 3A-2A-1A schools will be next Friday and Saturday at the University of Portland’s Chiles Center.
Competition for the Class 5A small division starts at 5:30 p.m. next Wednesday at the Memorial Coliseum, with Marshfield fourth among 10 teams on the schedule, behind Liberty, Hermiston and Silverton.
The Class 3A-2A-1A competition starts at 5:30 p.m. next Friday at the Chiles Center, with Bandon dancing fifth among eight teams.
Brookings-Harbor is among 13 teams in the Class 4Adivision, which also competes at the Chiles Center next Friday and Saturday.
Ticket prices at the Chiles Center are $10 each day. Tickets are $13.50 for the competition at the Memorial Coliseum.
