Grant to bolster Boys & Girls club activities

The Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon was one of 24 clubs nationwide to receive the Kimberly-Clark Family PLUS Award from Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
The $7,500 award was presented to the club for superior leadership in supporting family initiatives. Family PLUS sponsor, Kimberly-Clark Corporation, awards the contributions for clubs to implement successful family support activities.
Specific initiatives that helped the Boys & Girls Club win the award included the Family Counseling program and Family Nights at the club. Thanks to donations from Jim and Audrey Albaugh, the club offers a free counseling service to club members and their families.
DAR chapter donates to Marines in Iraq
An impromptu project was adopted at the February meeting of the Coos Bay chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. After hearing of a U.S. Marine Corps unit stationed in the Iraq desert, where the only access to water is for drinking only, the chapter made a donation to buy wipes, socks and hygiene items.
Letters also are being written expressing thanks and as a morale booster. All will be forwarded by the mother of one of the men.
Since the meeting was held on Oregon’s official birthday, a program was presented by Delores Barkley on 200 years of Oregon’s history. The program concluded with the Oregon state song.
Groups takes names for fisherman’s memorial
Charleston Fisherman’s Memorial Committee has set March 16 as the deadline for submitting applications to add an eligible person’s name to the Charleston Fisherman’s Memorial at the Charleston Marina.
Names are engraved on one of two plaques, “Lost at Sea” and “In Memory” after review by the members of the memorial committee. The most significant criteria is the person must have fished out of the Charleston/Coos Bay area for a minimum of three years.
Applications are available at the Charleston Marina Office, 63534 Kingfisher Road, near the outer boat basin.
