Burns dominates Bobcats at tournament

SALEM — It was a much different result this year.
Burns High School’s girls basketball team lost in the first round of the OSAA Class 3A state tournament to Myrtle Point by a point a year ago, and Burns coach Alice Herauf made sure her team remembered that result.
This time around, Burns put up one of the most dominating performances in state tournament history as the No. 2-ranked Hilanders defeated No. 4 Myrtle Point 54-17 Thursday at Willamette University.
“Myrtle Point knocked us off last year by that one point,” Herauf said. “We had that eight-point lead, we just couldn’t get the ball over. That was just a nightmare. I just relived that with the kids.
“We really came prepared. The kids were focused and they just did exactly what we asked them to do. I was really pleased with the kids’ effort and how they took over the game.”
Burns (22-2), which plays No. 7 Warrenton (26-2) at 1:30 p.m. today in the semifinal round, guaranteed itself of its seventh straight state tournament trophy.
Myrtle Point (22-4), which was the state runner-up a season ago, drops into the consolation bracket and plays co-No. 4 Valley Catholic (23-5) at 9 a.m. today.
Myrtle Point defeated Burns 39-38 in the first round a year ago behind 18 points by Sam Sanders. This time around, Sanders didn’t score a point and was 0-for-5 from the field.
Burns dominated Myrtle Point in nearly ever statistical category including field goal shooting (44 percent at 19 for 43 to 22 percent at 6 for 27), rebounding (28 to 18), steals (22 to 8) and turnovers (20 to 36).
“We’re a pretty good team, and we absolutely were terrible,” said Myrtle Point coach Marty Stallard. “You can’t put it any other way. We didn’t get off the bus. We didn’t do one thing right. I couldn’t see one positive thing that we did. I’d like to say that we did, but we didn’t. Nothing.
“We didn’t play defense, we didn’t play offense, we didn’t pass. We can’t have 30-some turnovers. I mean, I guess it comes back to me. It was my fault. I didn’t have us ready to play, I guess. I thought we were ready. I’ve never had a team fold like that, ever. Ever. I mean play that poorly.”
Myrtle Point got an early 3-pointer by Erika Leibelt and a jumper by Meghan Ross and led 5-2 two minutes into the game. But the Bobcats didn’t make another field goal until the final five seconds of the first half, when Kaitlyn McCollum had a three-point play.
Burns led 27-10 at halftime and built on its lead from there. Myrtle Point went as long as eight minutes without a point in the second half.
Junior guard Brea Ribeiro led the Hilanders with 15 points and had five steals. Marissa McCrorey led Myrtle Point with five points.
