Reedsport and Myrtle Point couldn’t keep up with the two Eastern Oregon wrestling powers at the Class 3A state tournament on Saturday, and had to settle for an individual state champion each and the third- and fourth-place trophies, respectively.
Burns repeated as team champion with 149 points, while Nyssa was runner-up with 146.5. Reedsport had 130 and Myrtle Point 115, while Gold Beach was fifth with 102.5.
The South Coast also ended up with four state champions and five runners-up, to go with 13 other state placers. In all, more than a quarter of the state placers came from the five South Coast high schools.
Reedsport’s state champion was John Drozek, who took the title at 140 pounds. Two other Braves — Justin Halstead (112 pounds) and Bobby Short (130) were runners-up, while John Covey (125) and Cesar Lira (171) finished third. Tim Spangle (125) and Jon Thurber (160) were fifth.
Myrtle Point’s champion was Jonny Campbell, who beat Halstead in the 112-pound final. Ryan Love lost the championship bout at 119 pounds, while Tanner Canaday (103 pounds) was third and Tony Moran (135) and Eric Rains (145) each lost close matches and finished fourth. Chancy Johnson (140) was sixth.
Gold Beach had two champions. Travis Moore repeated as the winner at 189 pounds, while Quinn Johnston beat his twin brother Kyle for the title at 103 pounds — a reverse of their finish at the district meet. Gold Beach’s Kelsey Carl (119 pounds) and James Davis (152) each were sixth.
Coquille’s John Binford came up short in the championship bout at 285 pounds, while teammate Blake Holmes was fifth at 130. Bandon’s Paul Merriam was fifth at 285 pounds and teammate Carlos Villa was sixth at 189.
Marshfield had a pair of eighth-place finishers in the Class 5A tournament, Tyler Nixon at 112 pounds and Cody Shipp at 189.
Hermiston had four individual champions and two runners-up and finished with 303 points, far ahead of runner-up Crater (165) and third-place Thurston (164). Marshfield was 20th (27 points).
The only South Coast placer in the Class 4A tournament was North Bend’s Nick Cheser, who was sixth at 119 pounds.
Sweet Home won the title with 142 pounds, while McLoughlin was second with 122.5. North Bend finished 23rd with 30.5 points.
Newberg topped defending champion Roseburg 189 to 174.5 to win the Class 6A title.
As has been typical, the top two divisions featured a large number of champions from schools that participated in the Coast Classic at North Bend in December. In Class 6A 12 of the 14 champions and 10 of the second-place finishers were from those schools, while seven champions and seven runners-up in Class 5A were from Coast Classic participants.
