Marshfield’s girls basketball team saw its season end with a 51-36 loss at Ashland in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs on Saturday.

The Grizzlies advance to the state tournament.

“We played them tough for a while, and I think we ran out of gas,” said Marshfield co-coach Doug Miles.

Marshfield was coming off a physical first-round playoff win over Dallas on Wednesday and the Grizzlies took advantage, Miles said.

The teams were tied after the first quarter, and Marshfield had a four-point lead in the second quarter and twice failed to score.

“We ran out of gas with two minutes to go and they made a run on us,” Miles said.

The Grizzlies turned the deficit into a 29-23 halftime lead and then outscored the Pirates 18-4 in the third quarter.

“We had open shot after open shot (in the second half) and couldn’t hit them,” Miles said. “The kids executed and played their hearts out. They’re just a little tired.”

Brianna George and Mel Stout led Marshfield with nine points each.

Stout had all her points in the first half and had to play nearly the entire game because of foul trouble for Jessica Hockema and a back injury that Brittney Young suffered in Wednesday’s playoff game.

“Mel’s just a warrior,” Miles said. “She’s just exhausted.”

Marshfield limited Ashland’s Kelsey McKinnis, the Southern Sky  Conference’s most valuable player, to just five points. But the Grizzlies got 18 from Allison Gida, 14 from Drew VanVleck and 10 from Brenna Heater.

The loss capped a season in which Marshfield rallied from an 0-3 start in MidwesternLeague play to reach the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. The Pirates also won a home playoff game for the first time.

Class 3A Boys Playoffs

Tigers fall in Portland

Bandon’s basketball team suffered an agonizing playoff loss at Portland Adventist Academy on Saturday.

The Cougars won the Class 3A playoff contest 70-68, overcoming a one-point deficit in the final 20 seconds with a steal and two free throws after a Bandon foul.

The Tigers then missed a golden opportunity to score and Portland Adventist hit another free throw with just over 2 seconds remaining. Bandon had one last chance. Connor Jackson threw a great pass to Max DeVillers, who had a shot rim out at the buzzer.

Bandon coach Matt Angove was thrilled with his team’s effort, but greatly disappointed with the outcome.

“We wanted them to leave it all on the floor (and) they did,” Angove said. “I’m real empty inside, because I feel like we were the better team, but we didn’t win. They played their hearts out.”

Bandon led by 10 points at halftime, but Portland Adventist rallied, cutting the lead to three points with an off-balance 3-pointer just before the third-quarter buzzer.

The teams traded leads in the fourth quarter before the final dramatic moments.

DeVillers finished with a game-high 29 points, while Connor Jackson added 12 and Garth Gant and Mike Bennett nine each.

“We played such a good game for parts of the game,” Angove said. “Max had a great final game.”

Angove also was thrilled with the effort of Bennett, who spent much of the season on the junior varsity team, but had five rebounds to go with his nine points.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, it’s Portland Adventist that will be in this week’s state tournament.

The loss also meant that Cascade Christian will be the only Sunset Conference team at the state tournament for the second straight season.

Far West League Playoffs

Bulldogs advance

North Bend’s boys basketball team extended its season and earned a cross-state trip by beating Sutherlin 66-61 in the Far West League playoffs on Saturday.

The Bulldogs visit Baker in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs on Tuesday, with the winner of that game traveling to Hidden Valley on Friday to battle for a spot in the state tournament.

North Bend beat Sutherlin for the second time in three days, and had to overcome a 36-25 halftime deficit to do it.

“What a way to build character,” North Bend coach John Olson said of the comeback.

North Bend senior Trae Collins gave a motivational halftime talk and the team bounced back after halftime.

“Trae rallied the team and they responded well,” Olson said, adding that North Bend took care of the ball better after halftime, relaxed and got the ball inside.

Collins finished with 20 points and Dalton Iveans added 18 and scored the go-ahead basket in the final two minutes. Jake Lucero hit two big free throws to help extend the lead and finished with 13 points, while Sam Lynass scored nine.

Joey Atterbury led Sutherlin with 18 points and Chris Mock added 17.

In a showing of team unity, nearly all the Bulldogs sported mohawks colored brown and gold. Only Lynass and Sean Jany had not had their hair cut, and both had colored their hair.

North Bend’s playoff game against Baker starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students.
