“Moonlight Spirit” by Phillip Charette is on display in an exhibit of Sculptural Works from the Permanent Collection at the Coos Art Museum. Contributed Art
Four new exhibits will be featured at the Coos Art Museum, with three of them opening today.
Assemblage art by Ruthanne McSurdy-Wong
Best known for her set and costume design work for the Sprague Community Theater, Bandon-based McSurdy-Wong assembles small, found and collected objects in “Spirit Boxes” and other work appearing in this exhibit in the Perkins Gallery.
“Blow Up”
This is an exhibit of artistic microscopy featuring the micro-photographic work of Svetlana Maslakova and George von Dassow of the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology, in the Mabel Hansen Gallery. Images in the exhibit include the larvae, embryos and musculature of sea life among other subjects representing the beauty found in research by the local husband-and-wife team.
Sculptural Works from the Permanent Collection
This exhibit includes the work of Douglas Purdy, Manuel Izquierdo and Phillip Charette among others, as well as the preliminary drawings of “Broken River” — a large metal sculpture on display outside the museum — in the Uno E. Richter Atrium.
Pacific Northwest Sculptors group exhibit
Opening Friday, March 6, work from 24 PNWS artists will be displayed in the Maggie Karl Gallery, including glass, cast and fabricated metals, ceramic, stone, cement, wood and mixed-media pieces. From small sculptures to large-scale, realistic to abstract, the exhibit represents the full spectrum of sculptural styles, a press release said.
All four exhibits run through April 11.
Reception
The Coos Art Museum will hold a reception for the four new exhibits from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 6, at the museum, 235 Anderson Ave., in Coos Bay. Catering will be provided by Nilda Dovale from the Oregon Coast Culinary Institute. Free. 267-3901.
