Grotto offers a little something for everyone

After two years of sitting dormant, the Grotto Restaurant at Eighth and Broadway in Win-chester Bay has a new lease on life.

The restaurant has been pared down, with one side of the building giving way to an antique and gift mall and eventually, a farmers' market.

“There’s something for everyone here,” Grotto Manager Deb Rausch said recently as the business celebrated its grand opening. “We pulled everything together in about a month and, thanks to owner Chuck Prather, I’ve been allowed to set up a very eclectic gift shop.”

While the store side of the business contains everything from antiques to nautical-themed gifts, the restaurant is serving breakfast and lunch, prepared by local cook Deb Egan.

“We want to keep our food at reasonable prices,” Rausch said, “but at the same time, make sure people don’t go away hungry. We also offer wines and mircobrews.”

Future plans call for an artists’ gallery with local artists encouraged to show and sell their work.

“Like I said, we want to be able to offer something for everyone and I know there are several talented people in the area,” Rausch said. “Also, I would eventually like to have a musician, like a guitarist, come in and play.”

The hours for the antique and gift shop are from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m Thursday through Sunday.

“We know this is a tough time to open a new business, but we want to stay positive,” Rausch said. “So, we hope people come by only if it’s to have a cup of coffee. We’d love the Grotto to be a community gathering place.”
