The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a 73-year-old man Sunday after his 12-foot aluminum boat capsized near the Coos Bay jetties.

Coast Guard members launched a lifeboat and plucked the man from the water at about 2:15 p.m., after a guardsman spotted the capsizing from the Coos Bay lookout tower. Medics took the man to Bay Area Hospital for treatment.

The tide was taking the man out to sea. When he was rescued, the man was holding on to two life jackets, though he wasn't wearing one. He was suffering from hypothermia, said Boatswain Mate Second-Class Michael Volz.

The Coast Guard identified the man, as Gary Butler. They didn't have a hometown, though Volz said he isn’t from Oregon.

“From what we’ve heard he’s doing good,” said  Volz.

73 in an aluminum boat holding life jackets. Another case where this is just not safe having people at these ages doing certain activities.
