For travelers who do their airline ticket buying online, United Express is offering cut rates on flights between North Bend and Portland.

Fares will start as low as $99 one way and require 14-day advance purchase, the company announced Tuesday.

The airline has struggled to fill seats on its Portland flights. For the 12 months ending December 2008, passenger traffic on those flights at Southwest Oregon Regional Airport dropped 39 percent. If ridership is below United Express’ break-even point, below 64 percent of seats filled per flight, the airport district reimburses the airline.

For tickets purchased through United reservation offices or at airport ticket counters in this new program, additional reservation fees may apply, including $25 for United reservation office bookings and $30 for airport ticket counter bookings.

Not enough room here, but the short version of who I am. I first moved to Coos bay in 1969, although I dated a Marshfield High School girl and life long resident in 1966/67. I returned here to marry that girl in 2007. I have several years of on airport work experience in both Phoenix at Sky Harbor, and Troutdale in Oregon. I am better known as a candidate for Coos Bay City Council in 2008, and I attend almost every council, committee, commission, and board meeting in the area to stay informed.

There will be at least two overqualified candidates on the airport ballot in May.

My Mom comes to visit from California at least twice a year. She always has flown into NB in the past because of convenience even when the ticket was just a little higher. This year sadly she is forced to fly into Eugene because the cost to fly into here is just outrageous!!!!. I can drive to Eugene pick her up and for the cost difference I can BUY a tank of gas, take her to lunch and do a little shopping. How crazy is that! It is sad when you are a local tax payer and you can't even fly company and family into your own back yard? When is someone going to start listening to us and do something about it?????

consumer wrote on Feb 24, 2009 10:01 AM:

It should tell you something when you call local travel agents to check on flights for you and they don't even offer ideas or options from NB to your destination of choice...HELLO.....they look to fly you out of Eugene or Portland to both keep the cost down and the connections/schedules...how pathetic is that....we have this big beautiful airport right here in NB and no one but a very small percentage of locals can afford to use it!

TRUCKER wrote on Feb 23, 2009 1:22 PM:

As long as we keep treating local elections like high school popularity contests where we only elect "good ole' boys" and "good ole' girls", we are not likely to get many qualified people to fill important public positions. The Airport Board, the Coos Bay City Counsel, and the Coos County Board of Commissioners are prime examples of the bad things that can happen when we don't take elections and voting seriously.

I went to our airport Friday, last. After careful consideration, and in an honest attempt to put my feelings into a few simple words, I have come up with this:

Put a huge sign on the entrance that says: Duh - ahhh Duh. Well, DUH lookie what we've brought you... Duh.

I would just laugh at the whole thing if it wasn't so sad.

Just like everything else....soon only the rich will be able to travel both in the air because of high fees and in their cars because of high gas prices. Family vacations will be a thing of the past and I don't know about you, but I have so many fond memories of vacations with my family as a kid. There are so many beautiful sites to see in the US that we could share with our children that are way too far to drive when you only have a week off for vacation. Unfortunately, because of the high price of airfare, families just cannot afford to go...Part of life is passing on traditions and I would love to share that with my young children so they will pass it on to theirs....sadly, this will probably not be the case

My family and I want to travel to Disneyland this summer for vacation. To fly from NB to Anaheim is $1948!!! That is crazy....we will probably drive because even though we would have to spend quite a bit of time in the car, we can take that $2000 and spend it for gas, tickets to the park, meals and souveniers and still have a few bucks left over...how sad is that, especially when you have an airport right in your back yard!

I have booked several flights for Portland from NB and each time they have cancelled the flight!! I too miss Horizon.

Southern Prices Increase wrote on Feb 19, 2009 9:48 AM:

Last month I checked prices from North Bend to Ontario, California....it was $658pp for Spring Break. Now I just checked again and it has increased to $824pp. Just to go from North Bend to Portland to Medford to San Fransisco to Ontario. That is insane. So for my family of 4 it would be $3300 just for airplane tickets...Really, are you kidding me?

Amazing wrote on Feb 19, 2009 8:23 AM:

Ok, here's the deal:
Tank of gas to Portland $75 (depending on car)
Pretty nice dinner for two $75
Standard Hotel room $160
Money for incidentals $50.00
Time in the car and evening talking with your husband, friend, family, etc enjoying time together without the airport hassle and feeling ripped off Priceless

i happen to be taking a trip in may and have been trying to figure a way to get myself and spouse to portland, i use to from north bend to portland on a regular basis with horizon air, but now have found united express is completely out of my price range. lets see it will be 229.20 a person from north bend to portland round trip, do the math thats 458.40 for two people to fly to portland from north bend, hmmmmm i can drive there and stay the night for way less. its time for united express to wake the hell up, and its time for the airport board to wake up also. i can vouch for alot of people in the bay area here that really miss horizon air, i cannot believe this is where we are after this huge expense for an airport, and shame on united express to even have to guess as to why they cant fill this flights. (duh)

To Funny wrote on Feb 18, 2009 4:20 PM:

You are absolutely right, Eugene is ALWAYS, ALWAYS cheaper by $100 to $200 every time. My kids keep checking, and every time these clowns announce a reduction, IT NEVER COMES UP.

I think it's over, let's just give the durn thing to Bandon Dunes and be done with the whole affair.

Rip off wrote on Feb 18, 2009 4:04 PM:

$99.00 is still $198 rountrip...are you kidding me with this. That is way too expensive. Do they think we're idiots that they think if they throw the $99 one way we won't figure it out. Insanity: you know what the definition of that is don't you....continue doing things the same way and expecting different results!!!

Way To Go wrote on Feb 18, 2009 3:46 PM:

Why even have a rate? If I were the airline I'd give away flights as they are guaranteed to at least break even. Get people used to them on the taxpayer dime then screw em over later with a price hike!

Funny wrote on Feb 18, 2009 3:38 PM:

That's funny....I have been waiting to book a summer vacation and I check airfair today and it went up since a month ago....It's highway robbery what they want to fly these day, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why people aren't flying...geez, can you say RECESSION!!!

DodieFaust wrote on Feb 18, 2009 1:35 PM:

Bad Timing wrote on Feb 18, 2009 11:56 AM:

It may be too little to late.....When it mattered for me and my business, that required bi-monthly travel with United.I was forced to change some operations due to frequent delays and ticket prices.........They can't touch the efficiency of Alaska/Horizon.But,now we are stuck with the Lemon....They dont partner with any useful airlines.our option are seriously diminished with United. This was a big mistake.Similar to voting in a socialist for President. Now our Federal Government is as Pathetic as our Local Government.
