Police arrested the Coquille High School track coach Saturday on charges she sexually abused at least one of her athletes during a previous school year.

Police Chief Mark Dannels said a citizen told officials at the school of sexual misconduct involving a school employee on Feb. 9. Officers arrested Wendi S. Boutiette, 36, on charges of second-degree sexual abuse, contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor and sexual misconduct.

She was taken to Coos County jail, where she was booked and then released Sunday.

The charges involve a teenage boy who was on the track team. Boutiette, who is married with two children, has been the head track coach at the high school for one year, having previously served as an assistant coach.

Dannels said police are continuing their investigation.

Coquille School District Superintendent Diann Gillaspie, Athletic Director Dan Cumberland and Boutiette could not be reached for comment.

Anyone with any information regarding additional information regarding this case is being asked to contact the Coquille Police Department at 396-2114.

I've only lived in Coquille and Coos County a short time. This case seems to hit a major vein. It's spawned about 4 articles and about 200 reader comments in this paper.

Bottom line: the accused is just that. Just accused. The case has to be tried, and perhaps a verdict rendered.

We have a very good new Police Chief not from this area. He is doing his job. Our City Fathers who hired him better stay the straight and narrow . . .

If this was a male coach I guarantee most of you would have a different view, right or not. Why are people wasting their time arguing about things they cannot possible know anything about unless they were there? Even if you know her, you have no idea what she does behind closed doors. People are arrested all the time and charged with crimes but I really don't see anyone coming to their defense shouting innocent until proven guilty. She may or may not have done it but look at her morals and values. Sadly it seems to be the norm these days.

In another article, "Roseburg attorney David Terry said the 36-year-old head track coach of the Coquille High School Red Devils did not have any sexual contact with the student who was named in court Wednesday, and that the two other “relationships” that Coquille Police are investigating were consensual and with adult males."

A lot of folks have come forward to proclaim the coach is a fine person. I suspect those same folks would be quick to say that she is the type of woman that would never have an affair also. But she is clearly having sex outside of her marriage on a more than infrequent basis. Maybe you all don't know your neighbor as well as you think. Is it really so difficult to imagine someone already engaged in multiple affairs to be involved in a third? Think about it. A willing woman can always find someone to oblige her, and she's clearly been willing. What's so hard to believe?

LC wrote on Feb 18, 2009 4:20 PM:

Thank you for that Former Dolphin! That was quite a trip down memory lane that I had completely forgotten...

That same teacher was into the students even in my day - some years later. Students would complain - but nothing happened. And how about the teacher at Millicoma that gave my best friend a candy bar to take a shower after class?

It was reported - and no one did a thing.

In light of other guilty parties - let's remember that there's due process here. And Wendy is entitled to it. Considering the counterparts that come before her, she's owed it. They never even had to answer for their actions...

I don't think anyone really knows anyone, no matter how long you've known them. We can't see into each other's hearts or minds to see what their intent may be. We can't really know what the intent may have been here on Wendi's part or the alleged victim in coming forward at this time. My only other concern is doesn't DA Frasier kind of know Wendi? Is it inapropriate for him to be the prosecuting attorney in this case? I'm pretty sure his wife and Wendi have coached together?

Ridiculous wrote on Feb 18, 2009 2:37 PM:

First, I wanted to comment on the remark made, I know Wendi, she would not do this. Do you also know the convicted sex offender who lived next door to you while you grew up? He was such a great guy, would do anything in the world for anyone! Second, unless this young man is mentally disturbed, he would NOT make an accusation like this if there weren't some truth to it. I myself was sexually molested in high school 30 years ago and I didn't say anything about it until many years later. Not only are you embarassed, but humiliatated. Third, when the truth does come out, and it will, whichever party is innocent, I do believe there should be a whole lot of apologies. Last, Yes, most teens do have a crush on some teacher or coach, but that still does NOT give that person of authority the right to act on the infatuation in any way.

Rick wrote on Feb 18, 2009 2:31 PM:

Let's all jump on the Salem Witch Trail Bandwagon and accuse, try, convict and punish this women before the facts are all in. And yes I do have kids who went to Coquille School but I beleive in our American court system and that a person is innocent until PROVEN guilty.

Ben wrote on Feb 18, 2009 11:11 AM:

I also realize it is important that people are innocent until proven guilty. In a perfect world this is the case. If I knew an accused sex offender, you better bet my daughter and son is not going to be hanging with that person regardless of a conviction or not. I am not stupid and the rest of Coquille better wake up to the fact that Coquille is on a rip right now and everyone better be sure to lock their doors and protect their kids regardless of who may or may not be guilty.

Ben wrote on Feb 18, 2009 11:11 AM:

I grew up in Coquille and graduated in 2000. I am deeply disgusted with the situation that has tarnished Coquille. However, Coquille has done a poor job recently of having a good reputation. Between Leah Freeman, drug problems, The Safeway 5, now Wendy and a sex scandal...I am not sure what to believe about the educational system in Coquille. I realize everyone makes their own choices however being a graduate of the high school I can affirm that the quality of education in Coquille is very poor and the faculty is a main portion behind the failure.

Coming back to Wendy and her sex issues, administrators or anyone who has contact with these kids consistently should be above question. In other words, these "adults" should be above reproach. Wendy is not. I personally know many people who have known her like I have and we all got the "creepy" feeling and stayed clear of her. I guess we know why now.

Thank you for being the voice of reason and speaking for the youth. This coach, as the adult, is fully responsible for the situation she's created. For those saying she could have never done this, either you didn't know her as well as you thought you did, or you are as surprised as the poor parents who trusted her with their children.

To Kris-Feb 18th wrote on Feb 18, 2009 10:03 AM:

I agree with your comment about "Innocent until proven quilty."
I am so tired of hearing it be said, that (he/she is quilty) we just couldn't prove it! This is how it is even after people go to trial and are judged by a jury and found innocent! It's so wrong!
I would like to know why the young man's name is not being given since he is an adult now. Even if he was 17 when this incident may have happened? If he is an adult bringing forth such an allegation then he needs to stand before others and be seen. She is.

HOW DARE YOU wrote on Feb 18, 2009 9:51 AM:

I completely agree with VONNIE. This is the reason why kids won't tell when something has happened to them. They feel that they won't be believed. Now the paper says two more boys might also have been victims of her disgusting behavior. I think the more the police investigate, the more boys we will find. The thing is that if a man would have done this, he would still be sitting in a jail cell with a bunch of bail to be paid in order for him to be released. Wendi got out what, the next day. What a double standard.

Former Coquille Grad wrote on Feb 18, 2009 8:35 AM:

I believe that everyone is innocent until proven guilty, however, some of the comments on this page do not take into consideration the victims of this alleged crime. If something did happen then the coach needs to be held accountable, if nothing happened then the reporter needs to be held accountable. The bottom line really needs to be that we have to do whatever we can to protect our children. I have 2 small children and I know that if they came to me with an accusation such as this I too would contact the authorities.

Vonnie wrote on Feb 18, 2009 8:34 AM:

The majority of you people on here are basically calling this young man a liar. Where is the compassion for him? What if this DID happen to him? What are you all going to say then? What if this was a young lady with a male coach that did this, would you all be saying what a wonderful person HE was? This is exactly why children are afraid to come forward when they are sexually abused, because they don't think anyone is going to believe them and the abuse just continues. Wake up everyone and think that maybe this did happen and what this kid is going through. All these little jokes about him enjoying it, that is pretty messed up! Think about his feelings he is the victim here if this happened. This could impact the rest of his life.

HOW DARE YOU wrote on Feb 18, 2009 7:37 AM:

Okay, for all of you who keep saying "I wish I as that kid" you are absolutely disgusting. You obviously DO NOT have kids!!!! Making comments like that is sick and wrong. More and more about this will come out and I think you will all be a bit surprised to learn that most of it is true!!!!

And for student athletes who aren't successful in the classroom....often it's athletics that keep them in school.

If you think that's alright, maybe you should be the one behind bars.

Track Mom wrote on Feb 17, 2009 6:43 PM:

Here is a little education for all of you: In Oregon, it’s illegal for an adult to have sex with someone younger than 16, even if it is consensual. If police find out, a person faces a charge of third-degree rape. If someone forcibly compels a person to have sex, that is first-degree rape. Let's not convict her until we find out ALL the facts. And if she didn't - shame on that young man for slandering her. She has a family. How do you think her husband feels? I can only imagine it will take years to repair the damage this situation has caused. How terrible for that.

Wendi - stand up for what is right. If you are committed to the truth, walk through fire either way. The right thing to do is never easy. Especially when you have your back against the wall.

I understand that if this is true that she needs to be punished because she is an adult and should know better than to have this sort of relationship with a young man. But all the talk about the poor "victims" and how they were "abused" is sort of silly. Maybe you weren't ever a 15 or 16 year old boy, but I was...and I knew exactly what I was doing at that age. This is inappropriate, but it is not rape, and when we classify this sort of behavior as rape it takes away from victims of real sex crimes.

As for the boy, he is going to enjoy everything he got from her, afterall, he is human and a young one at that.

I would give her the benifit of the doubt. Do not judge, lest you be judged. Let the persons that perfect cast the first stone. My prayers are with you and your family. Stay strong!

HOW DARE YOU wrote on Feb 17, 2009 9:33 AM:

Okay, a few things here. First of all, to Joe, you are absolutely sick and disgusting to make the comment you made. Children get really screwed up by things like thins. Grow up and stop being disgusting. I too, can not believe that they released her. If a man had committed the same crime, he would have been held. It is sexist to let her be released. All to often we allow people to get a slap on the wrist instead of making them actually pay for what they have done. Also, to WHAT, you say Coquille raised six fine young men who reently robbed Safeway. I don't call someone who would commit an armed robbery a "fine young man." This will all come out in the end. I believe the accusations 100%. I just hope that she gets what she deserves. I have small children and the thought of someone harming them makes me furious. Our children go to school to get an education,NOT to be sexually harrassed by someone that is in an authority position.

She's my neighbor and a good one. Don't be so quick to either judge or condemn until all the facts come out. It is her life and reputation on the line here, not yours. Wait and see, don't be so quick to see the negative side of life.
Be fair.

just me wrote on Feb 17, 2009 9:07 AM:

To the people that are saying "why is this kid just now coming forward?" kids are usually scared to tell anyone when they have been abused because they don't want to feel ashamed or just don't know if people, like most of you will even believe them. If she is guilty she needs to be prosecuted to the fullest extent the law allows for this crime for using her position to take advantage of these young people. And also all I have to say to WHAT is you need to go take a spelling class before you post any more comments on here!

listen up wrote on Feb 17, 2009 8:47 AM:

Before we all condemn her or acquit her in our comments here, we don't know all the details of this case. Obviously there was enough evidence to make an arrest; however, we don't know what that evidence is. Note how the article asks the reader to call if someone has information. Hence, the investigation is ongoing and the police are still collecting evidence. Furthermore, I attended Coquille High and knew Wendi, and am shocked by this whole situation. Also, in response to WHAT, the young men you refer to who robbed Safeway: there were only 5. Get your facts straight before you write about things you don't know anything about.

Gee Whiz wrote on Feb 17, 2009 7:53 AM:

There are so many "variables" here that could have happened. But no one knows, so let's not crucify someone based on rumor and a half baked story like was reported. Wait for facts. Grow up people.....innocent until proven guilty still stands.

I dont understand why wrote on Feb 16, 2009 10:54 PM:

they released her. Someone could have made this up but I highly doubt it and since she is being charged shouldn't she be held. What if she runs or goes after this boy and does more to him. Why are women treated differently? If a man raped someone would he be released?

well well well wrote on Feb 16, 2009 9:59 PM:

I dont know if she's guilty, but when I was very young, I had a much much older man take advantage of me. I was poor, he was rich. (But that changed for him :). I moved away and as it turns out I have an excellent life now. (He doesn't, but that's his karma). It can traumatize a young person. I hope this lady they are accusing did not do what they say.

Nate wrote on Feb 16, 2009 9:20 PM:

30 Days? They ought to give her 90 days plus 5 years probation. Most child predators get more than that just for soliciting sex from a minor. To often we see a double standard for sexual crimes. Why should it matter if the suspect is male or female? If she's proven guilty, make an example of her. We won't tollerate our childeren to be taken advantage of by anyone, especially those we trust to take care of them at school.

I don't know if this lady is guilty or not, but by the looks of the comments there isn't any teaching going on in Coquille! is that in English? (guess which one I'm referring to) You don't have to have a Masters in English to write a commment, but I would at least assume you would have to be able to put half a sentence together.

Irritated wrote on Feb 16, 2009 7:36 PM:

If this is true, lets let our city, Coquille, set an example by eliminating wasteful sports and focus on academics so our young people can be successful in life! Too much money is thrown away on athletics. Let our tax dollars count toward student success.

If she was an authority figure over children and she had taken advantage of her position then I hope she gets convicted and I think it should be in the paper so other kids that she may have done this too can come forward so they know that they weren't the only one.

This whole thing is ridiculous. Wendi has the love and support of so many people there is no way these lies will prove her guilty. No more victims will be coming forward because there are NO MORE! We love you Wendi

To What -

We basically have a new police department. I trust they will get to the bottom of this. Thanks for remembering my daughter but with the new Chief in charge I think and hope we will all see a change. I agree with Mikey - we need to make sure she is guilty before we crucify her.

Totsoc wrote on Feb 16, 2009 2:18 PM:

Give her 30 days? ahahahahah Yes indeed!! Let the crackheads, sex perves and repetitive criminals rotate in and out of Coos County Jail every five days. Oh...but keep all nonviolent family men and women in there for 75 days or more. NICE JOB AGAIN D.A.
I hope she is innocent tho.

what wrote on Feb 16, 2009 12:15 PM:

I thought you were innocent until proven guilty "Dannels said police are investigating whether other students were abused by Boutiette" Coquille doesnt need any more screw ups or bad press . MAKE SURE YOUR RIGHT BEFORE YOU BLAME GUILT . REMEMBER Coquille raised 6 fine young men who recently robbed an safeway at gun point . So would i belive a private citzen reporting a crime got there facts right . AS they claim it happend last school year . HOW MANY PEOPLE HAD THIS ROOMER GONE THREW BEFORE IT REACHED COQUILLES FINEST . I mean a last year this story could of change 50 time by the time it got to COQUILLES FINEST . Remember the poor little Freeman girl it only took a couple of weeks for the rampant roomers of COQUILLE TO make her case run cold and posibly the truth never found to much hear say .

Before we crucify the coach lets make sure she is guilty and this is not a person with a fantasy. If she is proven guilty then they should make a example out of her and give her 30 days like the guy that raped the girl recently.
