State officials have turned off Heceta Head Lighthouse’s lantern until the mechanism that rotates it can be overhauled.

Inspectors recently discovered worn out parts in the system’s carriage wheel assembly, a press release said. They warned that continued operation of the light, without immediate repairs, could cause further damage to both the rotating machinery and the light. The assembly was last replaced in 2001.

After receiving cost estimates, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department opted to take steps necessary for repairs.

Although its light is out, tours of the lighthouse still will be offered daily beginning at 11 a.m., weather permitting. Tour information is available by calling (800) 551-6949 or the Carl Washburne State Park office (541) 547-3416.

Just found out ... the light will be off at least 90 days. Actual time out will be better known when we know cost and extent of repairs. Thanks.

We don't know. We're working on cost estimates now, and the dollar figure will determine when we will be able to do the work. We have some budget for unforseen repair needs like these, but we can only stretch so far. We do accept donations, either directly to the park or through the Oregon State Parks Trust (http://www.oregonstateparkstrust.org/).

We'll send out another news release when we have more info. Thanks.

Does anyone know how long the light is estimated to be turned off?
