North Bend students got a two-hour hiatus from class and their parents a potential two hour-hassle this morning, when the school district delayed classes following a weather warning.

Nathan Burbank, the location manager for the Mid Columbia Bus Company in North Bend, said the decision to delay school and cancel the morning session of kindergarten came because of a weather service frost warning from 1 to 7 a.m.

He said he first became aware of the issue at about 3 a.m. while he was checking roads, and made reference to the odd weather on Monday.

“It was supposed to be icy and slick this morning, which it didn’t turn out to be,” Burbank said. “If we’re going to make an error, it’s better to err on the side of safety.”

He added that the main concern with road conditions had to do with roads in more rural areas such as Lakeside and Kentuck.

“If it gets slick it’s pretty hairy out there. If you have a bus full of kids, there’s no reason to take any chances,” Burbank said.

According to weather reports from Southwest Oregon Regional Airport, the temperature at about 3 a.m. was 36 degrees, at 8 a.m. it was 39.

In response to “What Snow”…all the experience in the world isn’t going to help the bus driver if there are others out there driving without experience. “Times Have Changed”…I believe someone is actually going out and driving the outlying roads in the very early hours. To “The World”…the temperatures at the airport are not as critical I’m sure, as the temperatures in the outlying areas. As a parent, I appreciate the school district’s consideration for our children’s safety, even if it’s a little inconvenient for me. I’m sure at times it’s a hard decision, and it could go either way, but I would rather be supportive of people caring for my kids, then complaining. Thank you to the North Bend School District for doing the best you can in caring for our kids!

This is one of the reasons it is hard for us to sympathetic toward employees of the school district. Let them work even if there is frost!

I Agree wrote on Feb 10, 2009 1:57 PM:

I would agree that it seems like the schools are closing the doors when they really don't need to.

I blame the crazy lawsuits that have caused everyone to be afraid of any kind of accident! Maybe 10 years from now we will be closing school when it is raining too hard.

Thank you for your concern for the safety of our children.

WHAT SNOW wrote on Feb 10, 2009 12:48 PM:

I totally agree. Sad thing is, people around here don't know how to drive nor have they been trained how to drive when the roads are slick. If the bus drivers could go inland to the valley and get training on how to handle a bus in the slick weather, maybe they wouldn't jump the gun if we 'might' get frost, not to mention, 'might' get snow.

And why didn't CB schools have a delay? There are just as many outlying areas in the CB school district. Might have saved them a few extra bucks on the budget.

TIMES HAVE CHANGED wrote on Feb 10, 2009 12:48 PM:

WOW! I understand the safety part but can't someone just step outside first?

What a Shame wrote on Feb 10, 2009 12:43 PM:

This should show you do gooders what kind of people you have running your schools. Two hour time delay, you got to be kidding me. Next thing they will try is shutting down the school anytime it rains so little "Susy" or little "Jonny" won't have to get wet. Sounds to me like the school leaders are bigger "kid"s than the kids going to school. Grow up, and think for a change.

The Brutal Truth wrote on Feb 10, 2009 11:33 AM:

Geez, when I was a kid it took AT LEAST enough snow to make a footpring to shut school down.

Now just the threat of frost will do it.
