Airport suspends free flights contest

The Southwest Oregon Regional Airport Commission has suspended its free round-trip ticket give-away contest.

Coos County Airport District Chairman Mike Lehman said today the district needs to evaluate the financial effects of the contest before proceeding with it. Varying ticket prices and inaccurate seat counts have the commissioners worried.

“It’s hard to calculate revenue because the ticket prices are different,” Lehman said.

The district set up the contest to offset a revenue guarantee for SkyWest Airlines. It put people in seats rather paying the company to break even.

“It’s hard to calculate empty seats because the information is not always accurate on the United Airlines Web site,” Lehman added.

Lehman said the contest will most likely come back after commissioners evaluate it.

In an agreement with SkyWest Airlines, entered into in October when the airline began offering round-trip service with Portland, the airport district obliged itself to pay SkyWest the difference between actual revenue and break-even revenue. They had to pay SkyWest $58,000 in November and $12,000 in October to make up this  difference.

Airport Commissioner Helen Brunell Mineau conceived the idea for the contest so the district wouldn’t be paying for empty seats and local residents could benefit instead.

In the contest’s first week, 125 people entered and there were 315 entries last week.

I wasn't aware that the "politicians" were responsible for the weather... Doesn't this mean you should all rant about ALL "politicians"? OTH has been our airport code all along, this has not changed. I would blame SkyWest for the failure of thier de-ice tower not for the weather.... Do you want to fly safe or do you want to risk getting hurt? You cannont state that Horizon NEVER had delays.... right!! You'd be a lier!!

GOOD OLD COOS BAY wrote on Feb 12, 2009 8:30 AM:

I had to laugh out loud the other day when I saw the banner flying over Hwy 101 in Coos Bay - it said something like now we have flights from Coos Bay directly to San Francisco .... sorry Coos Bay, did you mean to say direct flights from North Bend .... OTH - where in Coos Bay can you find the letters OTH?

Erasmus wrote on Feb 11, 2009 9:42 PM:

"... and it's still OTH."

Something like Coos Bay being an unnecessary port in an inconvienient place with inadequate transport to anywhere that matters?

YOU KNOW wrote on Feb 11, 2009 9:10 AM:

You know, it really doesn't matter what they CALL the North Bend Airport - you still have to fly in and out of North Bend and it's still OTH.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it Helen who brought up changing the name?

Why would you hold a free flight contest if you cant follow through with it. very tacky if i say . Who's bright idea was that ?

Name of airport wrote on Feb 7, 2009 3:33 PM:

I for one am having a hard time remembering the name of the airport. I am so used to calling it the North Bend
Airport, that when I have to tell someone the new name I can't remember it. This gets embarrassing, especially when I live here. I sure wish they had
left the name as it was, THE NORTH BEND
AIRPORT... When I even talked to someone at another airport and did remember the name she didn't know what I
was talking about, and other times at
airports they still said OH, the North
Bend Airport. VERY CONFUSING....
Who was the person that thought up this
changing of the name anyway ?
Another dumb idea to add to the list.

I totally agree with "contest participant"...I did not appreciate being notified on the mass list where my name is shown along with all the other entry names...tacky, tacky, tacky!!

wish i had an income guarantee with no actual accounting. $58k/ $18K each month
somehow i wont believe any number Skywest comes up with. I WILL NOT trust any who agreed to this STUPID Payment idea
P.S. You owe me $10K, My family came for a reunion and could not connect to or from Portland, so i had to drive

Timbo wrote on Feb 5, 2009 11:34 PM:

For what it's worth, ALL of the cancellations from last week (at least while I was around the airport), had nothing to do with the North Bend airport. Weather (fog) in Portland was bad enough to where SkyWest was not able to depart, the same goes for the flights out of Medford, Eugene, and Klamath Falls. Blame politicians, blame SkyWest, blame North Bend airport, whatever makes you feel better about the weather.

Oh Oh! These people remembered that it's almost election time and they screwed up. There will be overqualified candidates this year. Lets elect some.

Joy wrote on Feb 5, 2009 7:47 PM:

If the airport district has to pay the difference and break even revenue why not fill the seats, they're being paid for anyway. I don't see the logic in just paying difference, this way there is a benefit from it. if it is legal to fill the seats via contestant winners I think it is a great idea, it benefits tourism. The money someone would save on a flight that they might not have taken to begin with could be spent locally--I personally think it is a win win situation and I hope they bring the contest back. I would think that anyone with some basic accounting skills could develop a tracking system for actual cost and doesn't someone take a head count before takeoff? What's the harm? Is it hurting someone? Maybe the airport district would assist United Airlines in accurately tracking empty seats.

Contest Participant wrote on Feb 5, 2009 7:05 PM:

I thought the contest was a good idea until I got the email the other day about it ending. It was from the "Solution Divas". Maybe you gals need to quit primping and learn some business sense! The email was sent to ALL 315 people who entered and showed every single email address. It's one thing to show the name of winners--but to let private info as in PERSONAL email addresses out. That's just irresponsible and very unprofessional. I will NOT enter any related contest in the future.

Thomas wrote on Feb 5, 2009 3:30 PM:

My wife is driving to Portland today because of awful cancelation and connection experiences with flying out of North Bend as it now is operating.

Bottom line is that if you really have to get somewhere on time, go to another airport.
