COOS BAY — The people outfitted in white coveralls and hoods looked like beekeepers or astronauts climbing around on the roof at the former Timber Inn motel. No, there wasn’t a bee swarm on the loose, rather a re-roofing project under way.

On Monday, workers with Storm Guard Construction of Roseburg were installing a new roof and rain gutters on the old motel. They wore protective suits to shield them from asbestos, according to general contractor Scott Greenwalt.

The hotel is getting a long anticipated a facelift, but just not as soon as originally expected due to the economy.

“We had some delays with financing,” owner Harj Singh, of Virk Hospitality, said.

Once the work is complete, the business will reopen as a Super 8 motel.

Virk Hospitality hired the contractors also to install new carpeting and new furniture, as well as repaint in the rooms.

“Within a week another crew will be coming in to work on the rooms,” Singh said.

In September, co-owner Amandeep Virk, Singh’s brother-in-law said the Wilsonville-based company had plans to renovate the rooms, complete with new plasma-screen televisions and air conditioning. They had hoped to open as a Super 8 this month.

Singh said now it looks like it will be closer to the beginning of the summer before the motel reopens. Other plans have changed, too.

Last year, they planned to build an indoor swimming pool, a jacuzzi, fitness center, lobby and laundry room in a space that had been occupied by a restaurant and lounge.

Singh said now it’s uncertain whether they’ll go with those additions or reopen the restaurant.

Virk Hospitality also owns a Super 8 franchise in Creswell, La Quinta Inn in Wilsonville and Best Western Garden Villa Inn in Roseburg.

They chose the Coos Bay site for its proximity to The Mill Casino-Hotel and Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, as well as its accessibility off U.S. Highway 101. It is the first Super 8 on the Oregon Coast, according to the Wyndham Hotel Group Web site. Wyndham franchises nearly 6,500 hotels under 10 brands, including Super 8.

According to the Coos County Assessor’s Web site, Virk Hospitality of Coos Bay purchased the property for $1.3 million from Oregon Pacific Bank. Escrow closed in late November.

The Timber Inn celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2006, but Oregon Pacific Bank foreclosed on the property, previously owned by Leo and Donis Frare, last June. The property has been vacant since then.

Singh said there will be another celebration at the hotel once it’s ready to open.

“We will have a grand opening and invite everybody,” he said.

This is to Shocked Reader - Yes, I am all for free speech. I am just not for ignorant speech which is what you get from Mr. Bojingles.

shocked reader wrote on Feb 4, 2009 5:32 AM:

well in reading the comments that have been made i feel that many of you are right this town runs on the SUMMER tourism just remember that its a summer thing. what happens to everything when winter comes? businesses cut employees! i think we need something new so our BELOVED tourist actually have something to do besides sit in there brand new hotel rooms! also i thought this area was for comments but it seems that most of you are bashing each other. cant we all get along. and to Nate whatever happened to free speech? im sure we have all had a job at some point where we dealt with customer service weather it be at a hotel or one of the other thousand jobs. yeah its not all fun but deal with it. no need to get all butt hurt.

Former Resident wrote on Feb 3, 2009 4:54 PM:

Right on Nate! Beings that, yes, I work in the hospitality industry - I definately can speak on this! I remember living in the area, and the hotels filling up so fast even the mom and pop shops were taking the overflow!

101 is high visibility, and sure, in the winter months, things quiet down to the point where business is fleeting. But the hotels still sell rooms - and they all cater to different types of people who are looking for their "style". Believe it or not - the Mill isn't for everyone.

Bring on the Super 8. It gives people a choice beyond the Motel 6... and perhaps the lounge will reopen with the poker room in the back. If done right - this reopening could bring things popping right along to the Best Western and the Red Lion... when one fills, the other profits.

Nate wrote on Feb 3, 2009 3:28 PM:

This is to Mr. Bojingles - Do you work in the hospitality industry? Do you even have common knowlege about how a hotel runs? Are you a spokesman on the hotel industries behalf?

Yes, we have several hotels in the area. We also tend to fill most if not all of those rooms in the summer months. Wouldn't you rather keep those people in this area in the summer as opposed to sending them up or down the coast to a different community. So unless you work in the industry please keep your opinions to yourself.

good grief... wrote on Feb 3, 2009 3:05 PM:

TO MR BOJINGLES... its not ANOTHER motel, it is a motel in existance already, not a new motel being built, and yes it is good for the economy, it does bring jobs. some people that travel like a variety of motels to choose from, some like name brands they can trust, like super 8. so you are saying, we dont need grocery stores cuz we have one, so safeway, fred meyer, mckays, and rays food place can all leave cuz you all have everything you need at walmart? it doesnt matter if it sells out.. not all the stores sell all their inventory either. its called 1. a choice for the visitors 2. jobs for the community.

mr. bojingles wrote on Feb 3, 2009 12:50 PM:

we can't even sell all of the rooms for the hotels we have. granted yeah we have alot of hotels i just don't understand why we another one? common sence says that we need something that is going to bring this town alive. a good night life is great but what do we have?? THE MILL CASINO! WE DON'T NEED TO WASTE OUR MONEY ON THAT IF WE ARE SO WORRIED ABOUT MONEY.

mr. bojingles wrote on Feb 3, 2009 11:06 AM:

after reading some comments. i did wash dishes. i've work with the community but then when i wake up then i'm just tired of working for the man. i'm in college right now getting a degree in game and simulation.( it's a growing industry) and shows tons of promise and what i need to provide for my family(instead of staying in this county that is not going to do anything for us except take our tax dollars and do nothing with it. adding a board walk to the end of north bend is not going to happen due to the fact the two towns of coos bay and north bend don't just want one big town name. so good luck with this waste of time

mr. bojingles wrote on Feb 3, 2009 10:55 AM:

so i give this hotel at least one year and then it will get run down. simple fact of the poor decision making by our econmony. to good grief: i'm in school now because of the simple fact yeah i washed dishes but then decided i want a future for myself. so what am doing now game and simulation programming. yeah i know there are no jobs around here for me with that degree.

CH wrote on Feb 3, 2009 10:49 AM:

I have worked at a hotel in this town for over 14 years and am proud to say that it is a good job. Yes, you work hard ... but shouldn't you work hard at every job you do? Do not knock me because of what I do. I could be the next person that you have to speak to and I deserve respect for that. Tourism is huge in this town and it is the only industry that seems to be surviving ... so back off!

good grief... wrote on Feb 2, 2009 5:51 PM:

TO MR. BOJINGLES... I AM NOT A WAITRESS, BUT BEFORE YOU SPOUT OFF AT THE MOUTH ABOUT A WAITRESS NOT BEING A JOB... REMEMBER THAT THE NEXT TIME YOU GO OUT AND EAT.. ABOUT WHO BRINGS YOU YOUR FOOD... AND DONT FORGET TO TIP.. GRANTED I AM NOT A WAITRESS, AND MAKE MORE MONEY THAN THAT, BUT I HAD TO, I WOULD WASH DISHES AS THAT IS BETTER THAN NO JOB AT ALL...

Wow wrote on Feb 2, 2009 4:27 PM:

Once again, I am dumbfounded by the comments made by some of Coos County's finest. I am amazed The World published racist remarks about how "dot Indians are a minus."

Some of these other people are stuck 30 years in the past and obviously don't realize that their beloved, gritty, blue collar industry jobs are never coming back. Times change, folks. Get over it.

Tourism brings more than just minimum wage jobs, it brings outside investment, which for some reason you people resent. Take a basic economics class.

In fact, I would recommend going to college, which is a pretty good route to a promising career. Then you people could even learn how to spell and use proper grammar.

I would also like to learn what kind of successful, elite job "Bojingles" holds. I'm sure he is far more accomplished than a waitress, right?

It's no wonder CB/NB is (has been)in such dire straights for so long with citizens like you people.

Housekeeper wrote on Feb 2, 2009 3:44 PM:

RE:mr. bojingles
I would agree with you. I was a houskeeper here in town busting my butt extremely long hours, for a min.wages. I have clean up barf, used condoms, scrapped food off of the walls and wiped up pee from the ground in the bathrooms. sadly to say I lasted only five months cause doing this job wasnt coving for my rent and childcare. Oh yeah did I mention I had only 15mins per room to clean if not I could loose the job that was putting food on my table. I give a lot of credit for those girls who can keep with this type of job. But sadly to say I dont like anyone to know that I even worked in this job. So to do it for 20 with no benifits. After this I went back to school. I now work two jobs, and also have my weekends off and still get paid more now than I did working in housekeeping

The Coos Bay Thunderpot wrote on Feb 2, 2009 3:39 PM:

How about Virk Hospitality removing the large wall of graffiti on the motel visible on southbound 101?

How long has that been there? Has to be months!

We will be following up on it...

mr. bojingles wrote on Feb 2, 2009 11:09 AM:

we do not need more dam hotels or restaurants. what future does that hold for a graduate that wants to get out and work here?? no jobs. low based and low income housing is just stupid. being a waitress for 20 years is something not to be proud of. cuz when people ask you so what do you do for a living?? oh your a waitress. wow what kind of money is that.

grama wrote on Feb 1, 2009 3:29 PM:

Maybe they can get a grant for there indoor pool, from the Coquille Indian Tribe.

Something New again wrote on Feb 1, 2009 2:59 PM:

I am really glad to see the changes on this place. But that sad part is how long is it going to be open before it shuts down? You know Coos Bay / North Bend are known to do this. Im glad to that the company was smart to hire out of town did any of you think that they company out bided the ones here in town?

JoeB wrote on Feb 1, 2009 9:52 AM:

I don't understand why you whiners are so upset about a few out of town workers and not upset about the fact that, according to the World, the soon LNG site will employ most of their temporary and permanent people from outside of the area. Depending on who you believe these will be hundreds or thousands of jobs.

Just what we need wrote on Jan 31, 2009 4:16 AM:

OMG this is getting stupid,we need another motel like we need another Bank. This town needs industry not tourism.ok so we do need tourism but lets put this in perspective. We got enough motels/hotels that barely keep afloat.

Local wrote on Jan 28, 2009 10:50 AM:

Just another reason that our town is suffering (HIRE LOCAL!!!)....out of town contractors...shame on you!

Plus and Minus wrote on Jan 28, 2009 10:03 AM:

Indian owned and Indian operated (with the dot, not the feather). Don't expect any local jobs, even minimum wage. But it will bring a few tax dollars into the City, so there are a few positives.

nonsupporter wrote on Jan 28, 2009 8:12 AM:

And when you buy all of this stuff to decorate it... i hope you do not shop
Walmart. if you do then our money goes to China. Please shop locally and help this town out. If you want people to stay in your hotel they need a reason to come here. If our doors are all closed why should they stay at your Super 8?

non supporter wrote on Jan 28, 2009 8:10 AM:

I was excited till i saw that they brought people from another town to work on it. If you want to help out our area - why not hire people from here? Why should we support a place who does not support us - they obviously just want to make money. Sure that is the point of a business, but maybe consider the local people who are in need of work and hire them.

lori wrote on Jan 28, 2009 12:16 AM:

I cant wait. I hope it will include the restarant, Looking for a exceptionally great waitress, I have 20 plus years exp. excellant customer service relation, contact me

Dave wrote on Jan 27, 2009 9:48 PM:

Oh boy! Another Motel! We need so many more like the ones we already have that we can't fill. Lets get some more restaurants here too. Wake up call people, we need industry here to make real jobs for people who live here year around. Not seasonal!!

RRRIIIGGGHHHTTTT wrote on Jan 27, 2009 7:55 PM:

tO BAD THAT THE LOCAL LABOR FORCE WAS NOT EMPLOYED!!They could have used the work. God only knows how bad things are. Oh well, maybe if they have enough workers from out of the area, they may spend enough to keep the local government from raising taxes...HA,HA,HA....

cisea wrote on Jan 27, 2009 6:45 PM:

It's so good to see something is being done to that area and the building. Now if someone will do something to those motels in North Bend....hummmm

The Way It Was wrote on Jan 27, 2009 4:39 PM:

They need to keep the lounge and restaurant the way it was. This town has little or no night life as it is and reopening the lounge with live music on the weekend would help things out around here.

curious wrote on Jan 27, 2009 1:55 PM:

Great to see another business reopen.
I was curious that the workers have to protect themselves from abestos , how about the particles that float threw the air around the area? seems like a health risk and maybe the whole building should go?

Nate wrote on Jan 27, 2009 11:02 AM:

Come on ... yes there is a summer rush in this area. Look around Tourism is the only thing that this community has going for it anymore. And frankly if the locals have anything to do with it they would prefer it to wash up and go away the same way all of the industry has and will do in the future.

Nice wrote on Jan 27, 2009 10:32 AM:
