Marshfield’s girls basketball team got its first win under interim coaches Doug Miles and Mike George, beating host Springfield 54-31 on Tuesday night.

The Pirates have a chance to stretch their win streak to two games when they host Churchill Friday on a free night for fans at Pirate Palace.

Miles thought that the Pirates’ pressure defense was the most effective technique against the Millers.

“We scored some points off of pressure defense,” said Miles. “Moriah (Roberge) and Brianna (George) were very aggressive defensively.”

Roberge and George were the leading scorers for Marshfield, putting up 11 points and 10 points, respectively. Pirate post Jessica Hockema added eight points.

Leading Springfield was Kenzie Smith with 10 points.

Boys fall

Marshfield’s boys lost at Springfield 62-42 in the early game Tuesday.

Springfield jumped out to a 10-point first-quarter lead and never let the Pirates back into the game.

The Millers led 19-9 after the first quarter and stretched the lead to 52-35 entering the final quarter, when they held the Pirates scoreless for more than six minutes.

Mike Travess had a game-high 16 points for Springfield.

Adam Porter and Kyle Tedder scored 10 each for the Pirates.

Free nights

Friday’s doubleheader — the boys game starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by the girls — will be the first of three free-admission events at Marshfield.

The second will be a Midwestern League wrestling dual against Churchill on Wednesday, Jan. 21, with the third a boys basketball game against North Eugene on Friday, Jan. 23.

“With our economic struggles locally and throughout the nation, it is very important for us to keep our spirits high and support each other,” Marshfield athletic director Greg Mulkey said in a press release announcing the free nights. “This is just a small token of appreciation to all of you who have supported our schools over the years.”
