Community Sports: Fast Breaks for Jan. 10: Watkins takes title in Bullards Beach Run

Bandon High School student Jared Watkins won the annual Bullards Beach Run on Sunday.
Watkins covered the 10-kilometer course, which includes a trip past the Coquille River Lighthouse, in 40 minutes and 39 seconds.
He beat runner-up Mark Gagnon (41:17) by nearly 40 seconds in the race. Former Bandon student Archie Garrett (43:32) was third overall.
Gold Beach student Sydney Snook finished fifth overall and first among female runners in 45:09. She was followed by Barb Young (53:32) and Sandra Landry (55:48).
Dave Ledig finished first in the 5-kilometer race in 22:13, followed by Bandon student Sam Sutherland (22:29), who was first among female runners.
They were followed by Sailor Hutton (23:07), Andrew and Warren Bowden (both 23:34) and Brett Hutton (23:57).
Holly Hutton, who is 4, was first among youth runners in the 1-mile race, crossing the line in 11:26. Claude Wilson was the first overall finisher in 9:00.
Bitty Basketball
February is Bitty Basketball month.
Registrations are now being accepted for the program at the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon.
The program aims to teach players basketball skills and fundamentals. It runs from 5 to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout February.
The fee is $35 with a current club membership. Space is limited to the first 60 people who register.

Skills Challenge
The Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon will host a local JrNBA/JrWNBA Skills Challenge on Feb. 1 for boys and girls ages 9 to 14.
Proof of age must be provided at the time of registration.
The competition is free, and athletes will be timed while following a course that includes dribbling, shooting and passing.
First-place finishers have an opportunity to advance to the regional level.
