ASTORIA (AP) — A Clatsop County organization says it has abandoned efforts to bring National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ships to the Port of Astoria.

The Clatsop Economic Development Resources agency says it decided to suspend its campaign because requirements outlined by the federal agency disadvantage ports outside Puget Sound.

Penalties that would be levied on ports farther than 100 miles from Seattle include a requirement for 70 percent additional warehouse space and $7.3 million to help pay for relocating NOAA personnel and resources.

NOAA’s Marine Operations Center-Pacific is on Lake Union in Seattle. The operations center is home to four ships, and its staff manages six others at ports in Hawaii and Alaska.
