A fire in Lakeside sent a woman suffering from burns and smoke inhalation to a Eugene hospital and damaged a cabin Saturday.

At about 7:35 p.m., Lakeside Rural Fire Protection District volunteers went to a cabin fire at Osprey Point resort, 1505 North Lake Road, according to the Reedsport police log.

When they arrived, firefighters were faced with a 600-square-foot structure that had flames shooting through the roof.

Firefighters were able to douse the blaze in a short amount of time, a district press release said. The initial investigation showed that the cause appeared to be a cooking fire.

The 57-year-old woman, who had been in the building, was treated on- scene, taken to Lower Umpqua Hospital in Reedsport and then transferred to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene. Her name and current condition were not available at press time.

The cabin was not completely destroyed, an Osprey Point employee said this morning, but the extent of the damage is not known at this time.

The fire district sent out a press release advising people to remember when frying to have the appropriate size lid available in case of flashover, and if it can be done safely, place the lid over the fire to starve it of oxygen. If this cannot be done safely, people should leave the premises and call 911.
