Coos County deputies are searching for two armed men who robbed an elderly Fairview man after breaking into his home Friday morning.

Lewis Lively told police he was awakened by two masked gunmen who demanded money, according to a sheriff’s office press release. They took cash from the 78-year-old’s wallet and left. The Fairview man drove into town, where he flagged down a Coquille police officer to report the robbery.

The press release said the two suspects are about 5 feet, 9 inches tall with slight builds. One of the guns used in the robbery appeared to be a revolver with a long barrel. The case is under investigation.

Deputies report this is the eighth reported burglary in the Fairview area in the past six weeks, and investigators believe other burglaries have gone unreported. Burglars have stolen cash, jewelry, firearms and credit cards.

People with information in the case are asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 396-3121, ext. 395.

You have a very good idea for the fairview area and even provided the information which could lead to help. I hope someone will listen and take the inititive to carry through a plan to help ease the tension up there where the residence can all feel safe.

I got a kick out of a couple of the comments on here! In all seriousness though, I hope no one gets killed. I don't think we should rush to judgement on who the robbers are. It might not be and probably is not the Safeway robbers!
Those kids don't even have cars and they live in town. At least I know that about 2 of them.

JBT, Example, Steve -
please, can you show some humanity and not be so judgmental. What happened to this gentleman could happen to you or your folks whether you have police protection or not.

Being good and caring neighbors - watching out for one another - is the number one prevention

---"obviously coquille pd and the sheriffs office obviously are not offering to help, so go outside their system to someone who is willing to help"---

The residents of Coquille pay to have their PD work in their town, not all over the county. The county residents don't just don't pay for the sheriff's department to patrol. PERIOD!

If you want police protection you have to pay for it, plain and simple.

Here, in my house, the home invaders will be easy to find when the cops show.

Part of them will be there, another part over there, some over part over there..........

It's called a free-fire zone, just like in my younger days.

Let them find out what's behind door number 1!

sorry to say it wrote on Jan 16, 2009 12:20 PM:

sorry to break it to ya coos lifer, but the kids are from the coquille/fairview area. the safeway boys are more than likely the same boys who have been burglarizing the homes as well

Steve wrote on Jan 16, 2009 6:32 AM:

You asked for it now you got it. Maybe try supporting your Police might be a better way to go. stop whining.

Example wrote on Jan 15, 2009 10:08 PM:

FYI unfortunately this is an example of what happens when the majority of voters living in the cities enjoy police protection/response and out vote those in the rural areas whenever there is any attempt to fund law enforcement. No patrols in the remoter areas unless one is responding to a call. Ever tried to run code (drive fast) on bad roads, bad weather from Fairview to Charleston? Lakeside? Majority of serious crimes demand our presence elsewhere. Stop whinning..

LC wrote on Jan 15, 2009 12:34 PM:

Coquille has plenty of officers (6 at least). Why can't one of them go by and check on an hourly or so basis on local businesses that are open in the wee hours of the morning? It's not like there's anything else they are doing.

coos lifer wrote on Jan 15, 2009 12:29 PM:

Fairview is a nice and usually peaceful place to live . To suggest that these thieves are from thier is ignorant. They could be from anywhere. I suppose the armed robbers from the Safeway could only live in Coquille. Druggie trash is county wide. I hope they get caught soon before someone gets hurt or killed. Remember this next time you vote.

Extra patrols wrote on Jan 15, 2009 11:18 AM:

LOL.. No, No, No new taxes remember? Usually we have only one man on for 1600 square miles of county at night.. Too bad a state hwy dosn't run through there, perhaps the state could patrol it?? LOL.. Stop your whinning already..

Community Watch wrote on Jan 14, 2009 1:06 PM:

I agree that the community needs to band together on this. I think the police department should organize this and stand up a meeting for fairview folks as a starting point, then they can all get together and decide what to do (e.g. 2 hours of community watch a week like mentioned). Maybe the police could send a flier to the neighborhood folks about suggestions for staying safer (security systems, etc). I'm not from the area, otherwise would love to help. My own neigborhood has a TIGHT community watch group and has never been robbed. Though I realize that could still happen, which is why we keep it up.

maybe "Just wandering" isn't from Fairview

What a Shame wrote on Jan 14, 2009 9:24 AM:

To JUST WONDERING.....I noticed in your blog that you stated "if YOU want info on how to do it correctly", (the cb patrol), I was just wondering why, if you know so much about this progrom, why aren't YOU trying to orginize it. Are you another one of those people who come up with all of these "fantastic" ideas, just as long as SOMEONE ELSE does it? Get off your duff and do something positive instead of giving the rest of US the idea. Put out flyers in Fairview, orginize a community meeting and see what the rest of the people in that area think about YOUR idea, maybe it would work, I sure hope so. You suggested the idea, not YOU orginize it and you will probably find that other people agree with you.

JUST WONDERING... wrote on Jan 14, 2009 1:15 AM:

by the way, there were 2 reasons why i picked bob webb from bandon to help you, even though it is in fairview... 1)that was a program in bandon, and he knows several people that were in the program that can help you... and 2)obviously coquille pd and the sheriffs office obviously are not offering to help, so go outside their system to someone who is willing to help.

JUST WONDERING... wrote on Jan 14, 2009 1:12 AM:

well, i remember many many years ago... bandon used to have a "short" crew also, and the community formed a program, called "the cb patrol" which was patroled by the community, and when they saw something happening, they would report it. they had different people each night, patroling the neighborhoods, similiar to security patrol. that could always be arranged in that area, or any area for that matter. all it takes is a couple hours a day from each resident to be a part in protecting each other. if you would like info on how to do it correctly, im sure bob webb from the bandon pd could pull up old records and inform you on some ideas on how to do it. im sure everyone one of you have atleast one maybe 2 hours to spare that you could protect your community before something drastic does happen.

Very Scared wrote on Jan 13, 2009 10:51 PM:

This very brave and unassuming man deserves better. I hope something good comes out of this horrible incident. Local law enforcement and community leaders need to make an all-out effort to asssure residents'safety in their own homes. Mr. Lively received great honors in other parts of the country because he had worked freely toward betterment of America's native people from Oklahoma to Alaska. He chose this community for his retirement home. He and his neighbors deserve to have a safe place to live. I implore the community leaders to make this happen.

No one is safe wrote on Jan 13, 2009 4:55 PM:

I am this man's daughter. He is such a good man, very very honorable, and worked real hard all his life. So much for a peaceful retirement in Fairview. I guess when these things happen to you or your family, it really hits home that you're not really safe anywhere. To do this to anyone is just scary, mean, and evil. This whole thing just turned my stomach.

Fairview new crime capital wrote on Jan 13, 2009 4:47 PM:

Looks like Fairview needs some renovating to get rid of thugs. Come on - EIGHT break-ins in 6 weeks?!! Probably from those same two jerks who went so low as to rob a 78-year old man. I hope the local police are setting up more patrols in that area, and I'm glad they helped that man out when he drove through town for help. If not more patrols, everyone in that area better start arming themselves for their own protection if they haven't already.

Send them to Darfur wrote on Jan 13, 2009 4:34 PM:

I hope these people get caught or somehow get God's punishment for their crime against this very good man (who is also a native american and a military vet who treats everyone with great respect). People like this should not be allowed to be a part of our society. Send them to Darfur so they know what real suffering is like. Stealing isn't right even if you're poor. It would be one thing if they lived in a 3rd world country and had to steal food to survive. But we live in America, so if you're poor and out of a job, there is always a way. That said, these guys are probably just plain mean idiots who weren't raised right.

Not afraid to use it wrote on Jan 13, 2009 11:05 AM:

The victim is my neighbor. He couldn't find his cell phone and his landline handset was dead so he drove to town, speeding hoping to draw attention, which he did, and reported the incident. My complaint is why didn't we in the area hear about this 4 or 5 incidents ago? Things might have gone differently. They certainly will if this happens at my home.

Neighbor wrote on Jan 13, 2009 11:02 AM:

I live in the Fairview area and have heard nothing about robberies. If there have been so many in such a short time period- why haven't the police notified people who live in the area? I am now on edge for my safety and that of my neighbors!

just me wrote on Jan 13, 2009 8:45 AM:

To Just Wondering: MAYBE he was just a very frightend elderly man that wanted to report this directly to the sheriffs office! It sounds like to me that since this is all happening in Fairview the criminals are from Fairview. Let's all just pray that this doesn't escalate and these men don't end up killing someone during their fiasco's. But in the end it could go the other way and a homeowner could end up killing one of them and it would be justifiable!

laid off wrote on Jan 13, 2009 8:33 AM:

The reason there is no partoling out there and no one to respond is..... THEY ALL GOT LAID OFF!!!!!!
There won't be anyone going to jail until some one gets killed because there are not enogh Deputies to man the jail. "Just wondering" has a lot of good questions things that Detectives would ask. Sadly there are no Detectives the commissioner eliminated thosed unnecessary positions. So the patrol deputies must investigate all of the reports of child abuse, assaults, and respond to traffic hazards and accidents. No problem to do this 24 hours a day seven days a week with seven full time patrol officers the County is safe.

VETCOP wrote on Jan 13, 2009 4:11 AM:

What cowards to steal from an old man, these dirt bags will invade the wrong house and get ventilated. Guess who will go to jail?

What do you think wrote on Jan 12, 2009 7:53 PM:

Sounds like a couple young men need money and things to trade for drugs.

just wondering... wrote on Jan 12, 2009 5:33 PM:

the 78 year old drove into town to report it, so did he not see what they were driving? what is wrong with the payphone at the store? did he not have a home phone? maybe they didnt go to coquille, maybe they went to coos bay on old coos bay wagon road, or maybe they went to myrtle point, there are many ways out of there besides going to coquille, maybe they live in the fairview area, how close were the other crimes? that is the sheriffs office area to patrol, maybe they should patrol it more often, were they all around the same time of day? alot of questions go into this...

Packin wrote on Jan 12, 2009 5:01 PM:

If they show up here, I'll help.

Surprise wrote on Jan 12, 2009 1:26 PM:

if we could just get the police to respond when the house has been burglarized instead of sending a CSR, maybe they could find some type of evidence like fingerprints or footprints. But they're too short-handed to even show up. And the thieves know this.

What a Shame wrote on Jan 12, 2009 12:57 PM:

If anyone knows anything about what happened here, please report it to the police. If these two slime bags would break into this house, they would not hesitate to break into yours. Breaking into and robbing a 78 year old person is just about as low a person can get. Help in any way that you can.
