Ruling on the river

Cheers to the Oregon State Marine Board for rejecting a motor boat ban on the Coquille River’s South Fork. State rules should be the last resort for resolving friction among river users. Reconciliation, not regulation, should be the route to a solution.

A shot of vigor

Cheers for renewed efforts to revitalize the North Bend senior center. Lunches are back, there’s talk of bingo, and volunteers are working to organize committees. Involving more seniors in running the place will be good for the center — and for the seniors themselves.

As if a limp economy weren’t enough, America is out of digital TV converter coupons. Millions of screens could go dark next month. Welcome to 1933. Gather ’round the radio for a Fireside Chat. President Obama can sub for FDR, while Hillary Clinton channels Eleanor.

Retired in place

Jeers to Joseph T. Kelliher, departing chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. He plans to stay on the commission while looking for a job in the energy industry. But he’ll recuse himself from decisions. How nice for him! How rotten for taxpayers.

Saving the past

Cheers for the Coquille Valley Museum and the volunteers who run it. Keeping alive the history of America’s small communities is a project no government agency, university or corporation will ever undertake. It has to be done for love.

The road to rancor

Jeers to Coos County officials, for deciding a union grievance justifies a hush-hush handling of the Road Department mess. Secret decision making was a key reason for the current political uproar. Please, let’s find a way to bring this issue into the light of day.

Holiday farewell

Hurry! Set out your dried-up Christmas tree this morning, so Coos Bay and North Bend firefighters can pick it up. (And remember to include a charitable donation for the causes they support.) Cheers to the hose wranglers for this timely annual service.
