Bend-La Pine school enrollment down

Sunday, January 11, 2009 |
BEND (AP) — Enrollment at Bend-La Pine Schools grew by 22 percent since 2000 but is leveling off. Other districts in the region cite similar trends and say rising unemployment may be to blame.
This year Crook County School District said it likely will cut least 10 days from the school year, and last spring Sisters budgeted for fewer students after a drop of 125 over two years.
Bend-La Pine is down 30 elementary students where it normally would see an increase of 30.
School districts receive about $5,600 per student from the state based on the number of full-time students on Oct. 1.
Early over-projecting means reduced payments.
Effects of the tight economy also are showing up. As of December, more students were on free and reduced-price lunches, which is how the district measures lower-income enrollment.
