BANDON — The alarming nature of graffiti discovered on a boys bathroom wall at Bandon High School on Dec. 7 has prompted a full police investigation.

Bandon Police Officer Adam Slater said there has been an ongoing problem with graffiti at the school for the past six weeks, but wouldn’t divulge the nature of the graffiti in Wednesday’s incident.

“We’ve had some vandalism and some inappropriate graffiti that was derogatory toward a teacher, and we’re doing some investigation,” Bandon Schools Superintendent Diane Buche said Friday. “We’re trying really hard to let kids know this is serious stuff and we’re going to put an end to it.”

School officials closed the bathroom for a short period of time Wednesday afternoon to investigate. While the facility was closed, another nearby restroom was vandalized.

“A chunk of porcelain was broken off a urinal in the second bathroom,” Slater said.

There was no estimate on the cost of damage.

BHS Principal Gaye Knapp said the graffiti was directed toward a teacher, suggesting the teacher is gay. Graffiti discovered Wednesday included a list of fanciful ways the teacher could be killed.

“I think it crosses the line when it mentions ways he could die,” she added. “I’m tired of having to send a janitor in every day to check the walls (for graffiti). When we find out who it is, I’m going to give the most severe form of discipline my office can do.”

The graffiti was removed by school district personnel. The high school has 16 video/security cameras in its halls, but none in any bathrooms. Officers have been given access to the tapes.

Anyone with any information on either incident is asked to call Officer Slater at 347-2241.

I can't believe what the society is coming to. The person(s)invovled in the graffiti needs to have a punishment that fits their crime. I don't care if the teacher gave them a bad grade or not. Grow up people!!!!!

Why dont you people look into the fact of WHY this kid is acting out so bad? There is obviously a reason for it. Yes maybe the teacher gave him a bad grade but that really wouldnt warrent this kind of behavior.
Instead of hanging the kid try to help them. Sending the kid to juvy will just make him a bigger better criminal.

This is why Corporal Punishment needs to come back to America again. This whole thing about Time Outs and making the child think about what they did is really stupid. A Good old fashion Leather Rawhide belt and or a Good Long Strong Hickory Switch needs to be used again. I highly doubt that this teacher is Gay in the first place. It is probably some student who is failing and refuses to buckle down and study and is trying to make someone afraid.
I really wish the lawmakers would stop making laws that do not work and that they do not enforce in the first place. Like making what he is saying hate speech!!! Soooo What are you going to do about it? Making threats is one thing, carrying them out is something completely different. Start checking to see if this individual has the capability to carry out such a threat. If he has the weapons, people and the means to do it then I would take it serious. More than likely he does not have the means to do anything of this nature. Get a grip folks!!!!

good grief... wrote on Jan 11, 2009 11:27 PM:

IT DOESNT MATTER IF THE TEACHER IS GAY OR NOT, THAT IS DISCRIMINATION, AND PUNISHMENT SHOULD BE TO THE FULLEST IT CAN. YOU DO NOT LEARN TO DISCRIMINATE AT SCHOOL. I HAVENT BEEN IN SCHOOL FOR OVER 20 YEARS, WE HAD GAY AND LESBIAN TEACHERS, THEY GOT TREATED JUST LIKE THE REST OF THE TEACHERS... WHAT THAT CHILD DID WAS SOOOO SOOO WRONG. HE NEEDS SEVERE PUNISHMENT. I HOPE THOSE TAPES SHOW WHO WENT INTO THE RESTROOM, AND HOPEFULLY THEY CAN TELL BY THE HANDWRITING.

The person(s) responsible for this kind of conduct deserves to be severly punished. Juvie time and summer school, and put to working in the school, under supervision to clean bathrooms with a toothbrush. Forget the crappo about child abuse and too young to work! WE did physical labor as kids and it didn't kill us. WE (most of us anyway), learned responsibility and respect for others and property.
