How does Coos County spend its money and what about our neighbors?

Here's a look at spending for the mathematically minded.

Coos County

New roadmaster? The county and the top candidate are working on contract details. Until a deal is struck, county officials declined to comment on whether the candidate is local or a current road department employee.

Layoff list

Maintenance workers: 19

• Maintenance worker I  — $30,696 to $33,468 (2008-09 fiscal year salary).

• Maintenance worker II — $34,492 to $36,028.

• Maintenance worker III — $34,920 to $35,940.

• Maintenance worker IV — $36,456.

* Note cost totals are for entire 2008-09 budget year, which started on July 1, 2008. Laid off workers will be employed with the county through Jan. 20, more than half the budget year. Commissioner Kevin Stufflebean said implementing cuts mid-year would save the county $250,000 to $300,000 after unemployment costs are paid.

Coos County overall

Total Road Department 2008-09 budget — $16.1 million

There is $4.4 million listed as a donation in the 2008-09 budget. The amount is an in-kind “donation” of work the U.S. Forest Service will pay for on a stretch of county road on Powers Highway south of Powers.

Road Maintenance Division: $5,244,294*

Fleet Services Division: $1,647,542 *   

Capital Projects Division: $6,597,384; $4.7 million is federal money that passes through the county to pay for designated projects.

Did anybody see that Boise Cascade and Freightliner are laying off also. About 300 between the two companies. It's not only Coos County in trouble, it's everywhere!
