BANDON — Cascade Christian never held a particularly big lead on Bandon’s girls basketball team Tuesday night.
But the Tigers never were able to get in front of the Challengers in the final three quarters, and were undone by poor shooting and crucial mistakes in the final few minutes as Cascade Christian escaped with a 48-43 victory.
“We just didn’t execute down the stretch,” said Bandon coach Ken Nice.
The Tigers trailed by nine points entering the fourth quarter, but cut the deficit to four points several times and eventually pulled within three points at 44-41 on an inside basket by Briana Valentine with 2 minutes, 45 seconds remaining.
But the Tigers had four turnovers in the final minutes and Cascade Christian got a basket by Kierstin Barlow after rebounding a missed free throw and added two more free throws to put the game out of reach.
“To their credit, they hit some big shots that weren’t easy shots,” Nice said of the Challengers, adding that he was pleased with how his team defended during the game.
But Bandon never was able to make shots when it had chances to catch Cascade Christian.
For the game, the Tigers shot just 28 percent (14-for-50).
Nice said his team had good looks at the hoop, but didn’t make enough of the attempts. Bandon shot just 2-for-15 from 3-point range, when a few treys could have put pressure on the Challengers.
Cascade Christian coach Marvin Denman was happy with how his team handled the late rally by the Tigers.
“Bandon is well-coached,” he said, adding that the Tigers caused some problems when they switched their half-court defense in the final minutes.
But after Bandon forced back-to-back turnovers, the Challengers adjusted and didn’t give the ball away again.
Allena Cesaro led Cascade Christian with 12 points.
Melinda Torres had a big night for the Tigers with 14 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Brittney Smith added nine points and Valentine scored eight. Jennifer Torres had five rebounds and four assists to go with her five points.
Cascade Christian improved to 2-0 in league play, while the Tigers fell to 0-2 heading into a road game at league newcomer Rogue River on Friday.
Nice would like to see another strong effort in that game.
“I’m proud of them for competing all the way,” he said. “I’m encouraged by tonight.”

Pirates fall
Marshfield dropped to 0-2 in Midwestern League play, losing 65-43 at North Eugene on Tuesday.
Kristen Huff had 18 points and Taylor Ficek added 14 for the Highlanders.
Marshfield coach Debbie Dunbar said she saw some good things, but not enough, out of her team.
“I just believe we can do better,” she said. “We’re a better team than we’ve shown in the first couple games in league. We are still not playing like we can play together as a team.”
Brianna George had 15 points to lead the Pirates, while Brittney Young added 11 and Jessica Hockema eight.
“I think we did a better job attacking the basket tonight,” Dunbar said. “I think we could have run against them. When we got our transition going, we scored buckets.”
North Eugene outscored the Pirates 31-16 in the second half to pull away for the win.
The Pirates next face co-No. 1 Willamette in Eugene on Friday.
