Restroom fan malfunction causes general alarm

Tuesday, January 06, 2009 |
A Coos Bay store’s restroom exhaust fan shorted out Monday evening, producing some smoke and a sizable response from the Coos Bay Fire Department.
Fire Chief Stan Gibson said two engines, a ladder truck, two support vehicles and 22 firefighters responded to the call at the U.S. Coast Guard Exchange, 1684 Ocean Blvd. They spent a little more than two hours at the store, mostly removing smoke and cleaning the area.
Gibson said no one was in the store at the time and damage was limited to smoke and the fan’s motor, which he estimated at less than $2,000. Responders learned about the fire from a smoke alarm at about 5:45 p.m.
