Coos County’s members of the Board of Commissioners are scheduled to sit down together Wednesday for their first official meeting with newcomer Bob Main.

The 9 a.m. meeting at the courthouse in Coquille is the regular weekly time the commissioners publicly discuss the county’s business. It’s a skinny agenda, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be issues to talk about, since sitting commissioners Nikki Whitty and Kevin Stufflebean announced last week the county will lay off 22 of 39 Road Department workers.

Nothing about the department appears to be on the agenda, but it would be Main’s first opportunity as commissioner to discuss the announcement with the deciders.

The board is scheduled to approve grants for the public health and sheriff’s departments, OK a financial assistance agreement between the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the sheriff’s office, among other consent items.

Main minimized wrote on Jan 6, 2009 7:06 PM:

You would think that Whitty and Stufflebean would try to get off to a good start with Main, although their previous actions seem like they'd rather have him out of the picture. In the past, each commissioner is detailed to oversee a few departments, with the load split evenly between them. However, in this case, Whitty told Main she was taking whatever she wanted and all that was left was Natural Resources. You would think that means Parks and Forestry. No - just some offshore stuff that couldn't qualify as a workload, plus the jail. Main was voted into office just like the other two commissioners. Shouldn't he have been able to enter into a discussion about which departments he would oversee? After these shenanigans, I'm more in favor of having a county manager and a council, and doing away with the commissioners entirely.

What a Shame wrote on Jan 6, 2009 2:28 PM:

I wonder what he will lie about this time. Already he is a proven liar. Even when he was talking to the laid off County road department employees on Friday, Commissioner Whitty confronted him with a lie that she caught him in. Going to be a interesting four years. Main is after Kevin, Kevin is after Main, Main keeps adding names to his "hit list", and Nikki is caught in the middle. Seems that we have hate and discontent among the troops already. Heaven help is all in the County. Sounds like a soap opra station to me.
