One person died and six people were injured, including a Coos Bay couple, in a fiery crash Saturday on state Highway 38 near Scottsburg.

Oregon State Police troopers haven’t identified who died, though members of the community have said it was Heidi Johnson, a 2006 North Bend High graduate.

Lt. Gregg Hastings would not confirm that Johnson was the driver who died. He said police have a tentative ID, though they are waiting for a medical examiner to provide confirmation.

“We are just trying to be careful,” he said.

The crash happened around 2:45 p.m. near milepost 20, when a westbound Toyota Sequoia driven by John Flaxel of Coos Bay was approaching three eastbound vehicles. The 72-year-old’s SUV crossed the centerline and sideswiped the first vehicle, a Ford F-150 pickup, driven by Konrad W. Kennelly, 50, of Port Angeles, Wash.

The Toyota continued into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a second vehicle causing it to land off the highway where it caught fire.

The driver of a Chrysler minivan, Shirley A. Powell, 59, of Sutherlin saw the collision and steered to the right to avoid the Toyota. The minivan came to a stop off the highway in a ditch.

The vehicle that caught fire was extensively damaged. Its unidentified operator, presumed to be Johnson, died at the scene.

North Bend’s athletic director, Boyd Bjorkquist, said Johnson, who played soccer in high school, was a great kid to be around.

“She always had a smile on her face,” he said this morning. “Her teammates enjoyed her playing on their team.

“It was certainly, a tragic loss.”

The pickup came to a stop overturned in the middle of the highway. Kennelly and passenger Martha Xitco, 50, from Port Angeles had minor injuries. An ambulance took them to a hospital in Reedsport, OSP said. A Lower Umpqua Hospital spokeswoman said both were treated and released.

John Flaxel was taken to Lower Umpqua Hospital for evaluation and it was discovered he was bleeding internally. He was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center, where a hospital spokeswoman said he was in fair condition this morning. His passenger, Joy Flaxel, age unknown, was transported by air ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Eugene, where she is in serious condition this morning being treated in an intensive care unit.

Shirley Powell and her passenger Evert Powell, 59, were transported with minor injuries to Lower Umpqua  Hospital.

OSP troopers from the Roseburg Area Command office are continuing the investigation with the assistance of an OSP crash reconstructionist. Highway 38 was closed three hours before being opened to one lane. Highway conditions were wet.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Elkton Fire Department, Scottsburg Fire Department and ODOT assisted at the scene.

You are more than a memory but a part of our lives. Thank you for being a part of our lives. We love and miss you!"

Heidi, you sound like a awesome person! Your family and this world has suffered a tragic loss.

I feel that everyone should wait for the investigation to be completed before pointing fingers at anyone. Just the fact that Dr. Flaxel and his wife have to live with the fact that their vechicle hit and killed a young woman and her dog is tragic enough! its a very sad loss to the family that lost their daughter as I'm sure the Flaxels are feeling sadness over all of this too. Let the police conduct their investigation and if Dr. Flaxel was at fault, so be it, let the law handle that...but know, he as an up standing citizen will have to live with far more than any law can hand him if guilty, if he did indeed cause the death of an innocent girl.

To North Bend..

I didn't mean to put you...I meant to put RE: Coquille. Sorry!

I do know many drivers over 65 and a lot of them are BETTER drivers than those younger than them. That is why its very common for car dealerships, enterprise, and other car shops to have older people driving the cars from one location to another. ( Such as from a dealership in Roseburg to Portland) I have a neighbor in his 70's still working delivering cars and my grandfather did it until he was 80.

RE: North Bend

You have no idea what you are writing. Many older people are safe drivers and is Dr Flaxel. Accidents happen....that is why the are called "accidents". Heidi was taken way too young. But she would never want these negative comments about Mr. Flaxel. Do you not think they have suffered too? And, I'm pretty sure Dr Flaxel's eye exam is current.

Please let all these families grieve and find peace. I am thinking of everyone involved!!

My deepest condolences to the entire community on the recent tragic events. My younger brother and sister knew Heidi through mutual friends, and I know that the loss brings far more sorrow to so many than I can imagine.

My heart also goes out to Flaxel family. That they know peace in this time of grief. My mother still speaks fondly of John and Joy, and I know that from our family to theirs - may they heal and continue their work in the world.

And I'm sure, as Heidi would want it-

"Please, do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep. Please, do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there, I did not die!"

Always remembered, never forgotten - to remain in hearts forever.

I'm thankful to see Heidi's mom's post here. If we've learned anything these past few months, it's that the World editorial staff doesn't seem to have a black/white procedure for releasing names; it seems to vary by case. It's unfortunate, especially given this family was still trying to contact family, that they felt the need to release her name.

Thank you to everyone who posted the wonderful remarks about my beautiful daughter. Heidi loved life and was happy. It was a tragic accident and I know Heidi would not like to hear any negative remarks about Dr. Flaxel. A few years ago Heidi was the brunt of some negative accusations that spoiled part of her junior and senior years. She would never let me speak to the family responsible and said instead "My friends and family know the truth and I'm not going to waste my breath on them. I agree with the Journalism student's comment that The World "spoke" out of turn. They were asked not to print Heidi's name until after the Douglas County Medical Examiner completed their findings and the OSP released her name. Someone from The World office called my home on Monday morning to get a press release and my friend who answered the phone told them "No, not at this time". It was not The World's place to release her name as we/she have many friends living outside of Oregon we were still trying to get in touch with. To "Arm Chair Quarterback" - it was a dry, sunny day, not dreary and rainy.

Older People Driving wrote on Jan 6, 2009 10:37 PM:

There is a huge difference driving to the post office to check your mail and driving Highway 38. My mother who is 84 that lives in California is only allowed to drive locally (city streets only, No freeways or roads posted more than 40mph) and I don't have a problem with it. I think it's a great idea.
It allows her to get around to her appointments and social outings but it doesn't have her out on the highway in high speed areas where she could be a danger to someone else. Let's face it, most older drivers have eye problems and slow reflexes, it's part of life. In our area with bad weather and narrow roads there is even more reason to consider this. There is a bus that goes to and from Eugene everyday and there is also the option of having someone else drive them if they need to go out of town. If my mother is able to get by with a restricted license certainly other people her age should be able to.

Thoughts are with all families suffering at this time. Main point to make is that everything happens for a reason, and evidentally Miss. Heidi fulfilled her purpose on earth and it was her time to go. Everything truly happens for a reason, even if we don't know what the reason is. Sometimes it is as simple as a message to ones family or a friend that life is so short, or to touch someone in trouble. Whatever it is she truly had purpose on this earth and bless her for that!

Heidi was a wonderful girl. She had a very positive and beautiful orah that just glowed ever so bright about her. She was alway's kind even to any kind of stranger. She stuck up for me hard core in High School and I will never forget that. I remember playing soccer with her in elementary school, it is by far one of my most favorite memories of her, that and her smile. She alway's knew how to make me smile even when I was feeling like crap, she truely is an angel, and she will live on in spirit with me and those who's hearts she has touched. I'll miss you Heidi.

Heidi was one of the most beautiful people, inside and out, that I had ever met. She always had a smile on her face and was always polite and courteous. Though not a close friend of hers, if we passed eachother in the hallways at school she'd say hello. So vibrant and full of life! And Moose/Moosie was her dog, also kind.
Though I have not seen Heidi in over 3 years I can still see her smiling face glowing.
My prayers and condolences for her family, may she rest in peace, and lets all pray they play country and rock in heaven.

I graduated the same year as Heidi. I have known her since elementary school. She was always smiling and had a positive attitude. I was shocked when I read that she had possibly died. To her family, I am so sorry for your loss. R.I.P. Heidi

So what caused the 72 year old driver to cross the center line? No Ice, just wet?
Another example how once someone reaches say age 65 or 68, they should have eye, and a driving test. I see too many older people driving that should not be driving.

This is so sad....

Hey World Editors,

Me again, picking apart your skills. Ever thought to get an official confirmation by the police investigators before posting that people THINK it was Johnson? They haven't identified the person yet or released a name, so why are you telling the public hearsay? (Good question, JS. We normally wouldn't publish a victim's name without official confirmation. In this case, however, nearly 48 hours had passed since the crash, and we were confident that the information we had received was correct. Judging by the many comments on this story, this young woman was important to many people. We didn't want to delay the information any more than necessary. Our condolences to her family. -- Editor)

Losing a child or sibling - or even a distant family member is one of the hardest things to overcome. My grandma lost her son, Danny Lowry, to a car accident when he was only 16. God was just jealous, and that's why he takes these amazing people away from us. Just stay strong. I can see Heidi will truly be missed. RIP Forever Young Heidi<3<3 You and your family our in my prayers.

It is so hard to believe this is true and just unfair. Heidi was the most beautiful kind hearted full of life person I have ever known. It was too soon for her to go...we needed her here, in fact we need a lot more people like her here. She made our lives better. I pray that her and moosie didn't suffer and that they are happily looking over us now, knowing how much they are loved. My thoughts and prayers are with her family...may strength and peace be with you in this tragic time.
Heidi you are my sunshine and always will be...i will miss you so so much. I love you girl!
