Local grapplers advance to tournament

More than 40 wrestlers from the South Coast qualified for the upcoming Oregon Wrestling Classic by placing in the top three in their divisions at a qualifying event in Coos Bay last weekend.
The Oregon Wrestling Classic combines youth, high school and college wrestling into one big event next weekend in Redmond. While the high school teams start on Thursday, the youth wrestlers compete Saturday and Sunday.
In the local qualifier, the wrestlers competed in five different age groups. More than 400 wrestlers from Western Oregon participated.
South Coast teams that qualified wrestlers for next week’s tournament include the South Coast Grapplers (nine), Gold Beach (eight), the Bucs (eight), Brookings (five), Reedsport (four), Myrtle Point (four), Coquille (four) and Siuslaw (one).

South Coast Grapplers: Tyler Denman, Zac Schneider, Cole Smith, Tyler Campbell, J.J. Hubbard;
Bucs: Benjamin Sundeland, Gavin Sherrill, Travis Wittlake, Tyler Nixon, Kody Campbell, Jarad Tokich;
Gold Beach: Taylor Bright, Derek Carl;
Myrtle Point: Tanner Canaday, Eric Rains;
Brookings: Riley Mayzyck;
Coquille: Austin Flood.
