For two quarters, Marshfield and Marist’s boys basketball teams were neck-and-neck in the third-place game of the Les Schwab South Coast Holiday Basketball Tournament.

Then came a monster third quarter in which the Spartans outscored the Pirates 24-9 and went on to a 67-42 victory.

Marshfield’s usually prolific scoring leader, Kyle Tedder, had 19 points in the game but it took him 23 shots to do it (he finished 6-for-23) as nothing came easy for the Pirates Wednesday afternoon.

“Right now we don’t have enough guys who are comfortable scoring,” said Marshfield coach Jesse Ainsworth, noting that Tedder shoulders the vast majority of the team’s scoring pressure. “We’re going to struggle a little bit until some more guys step up.”

Jordan Shephard had an efficient scoring game for the Pirates, earning 10 points on 4 of 7 shooting, but Marshfield didn’t find enough points from farther down the lineup.

For one half, it didn’t matter. The Pirates went up 7-6 early, but then the Spartans went on a 7-0 run that included four points from Calvin Philpott, who gave the Spartans an early boost off the bench. Marshfield’s Adam Porter stopped the run with a drive and bucket, and the Pirates trailed 14-11 after the first quarter.

The second period was more back-and-forth play, and Tedder scored seven straight points and Kyle Brown gathered an offensive rebound and made the putback to pull Marshfield within 29-26 at halftime.

The final two quarters were all Marist, though.

After Marshfield pulled to within 34-30, the Spartans went on a 14-0 tear that included four technical free throws. Then Marist’s Steven Bustrin sank a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to put the Spartans up 53-35 after three quarters.

Marshfield didn’t have an answer against the scoring onslaught, as the Pirates struggled to find open lanes in the Spartans’ zone defense.

“Our biggest thing was contesting all their shots,” said Marist coach Eric Orton. “We work hard. We don’t want to get out-played by anyone.”

Bustrin led the Spartans with 16 points, while Jeff Bedbury chipped in 12.

After the game, Ainsworth said he’s confident his team will bounce back from what’s turned out to be a challenging preseason.

“The nice thing is, nonleague is over. We’re now 0-0,” said Ainsworth. “You never like to get blown out at home, but I have faith in this team right now because I have guys who believe in it.”
