SOCC's Hansen controvery comes to a boil

Discontent with the local community college president balloons into a full-blown controversy in June. Though President Judith Hansen has succeeded at building relations between the Southwestern Oregon Community College and local businesses, her relations with campus constituencies have been rocky. In June, three employee organizations pass votes of no-confidence. The board twice reverses course on commissioning an outside investigation, finally deciding to order a review of Hansen’s work and campus culture.

Other June news

• A wooden “Charlie the Tuna” statue disappears from its 22-year perch on the east side of the Charleston bridge. It later is found dismembered in what turns out to be a prank gone wrong. Loon Lake chain saw carver Ellen Keeland volunteers to create a new Charlie.

• Titan Salvage sets up its massive barge Karlissa A at the site of the New Carissa on June 1. Crews begin the summer-long effort to dismantle the shipwreck.

• The Mill Casino-Hotel nearly doubles its capacity with opening of a new tower.

• On the national scene, Sen. Barack Obama wins the Democratic nomination for president.
