Razor clam bonanza on north coast

SEASIDE, Ore. (AP) — The Seaside Aquarium says populations of razor clams between Seaside and Warrenton are estimated at a record 9.275 million, up from just 1.48 million last year.

The general range is from Seaside to the south jetty of the Columbia River.

The reason given is the “set,” where they happen to wind up along the beaches, and this year that is in places more assessable to the public

Razor clams aren’t terribly bright and leave telltale holes on top of the wet sand, so they aren’t hard to find. People reaching in too hastily to pull them out barehanded may find how they got the name. Their sharp shells can lead to nasty cuts.

Shellfish licenses are required, and the recent limit is the first 15 clams taken.
