Fire destroyed a house near Allegany Monday night.

At about 11:44 p.m., the Coos County Sheriff’s Office received a report at 67520 West Fork Millicoma Road, from Pamela Inman, 44, that a neighbor’s house was on fire. There is no structural fire department in that area.

The call was transferred to the Coos Forest Protective Association, which went to the scene with two firefighters and a 200-gallon engine, said Nils Storksen, the unit forester for the CFPA’s Coos Bay office. Two sheriff’s deputies responded, too, he added.

By the time they arrived, the structure had burned, Storksen said. They remained at the scene for about 45 minutes.

“The structure fire did not spread to the brush so there was nothing we could do,” he said. “We are not structural firefighters. If people do not live within a rural fire protection district, they don’t have structural fire protection.”

The cause of the fire is undetermined. Storksen said a fire marshal may check out the fire scene today.

The names of the owners of the home were unavailable at press time.

So Many Fires Lately. What Is Going On?

SMD wrote on Jan 5, 2009 2:22 PM:

It is sad indeed that the home burned down and along with it all the things that the family worked hard to get. Memories that are not replaceable. My thoughts and hopes are with them and maybe we can start some sort of fund to help them out of this crisis.

However, the sad truth is that CFPA did what they could which was make sure that nothing surrounding the home caught on fire inadvertantly protecting the neighbors or any further damage.

By the way...I'm not sure many of you realize this but 200 gallons is not a lot of water. It is actually sizeable to a small swimming pool so had they used all of their water on the structure they would not have had any remaining to stop the fire from spreading. Also, not having been trained on structural fires, I'm sure they would not have known which areas to spray first to prevent further damage.

Community members of Allegany should probably consider a volunteer fire department or something similar.

For all of you complaining, why did'nt you get out your garden hose and try to do something instead of complaining about what CFPA didn't do. You gripe they didn't do anything, yet, you didn't do anything yourself?

Whynot wrote on Jan 1, 2009 12:19 PM:

CFPA has no jurisdiction other than on forest lands which pay taxes each year to support the service. Houses are not taxed for the support of CFPA.

For CFPA or any other fire service organization to attempt to fight a house fire outside their jurisdiction raises a serious question of no insurance coverage should they get hurt in the process. You get what you pay for.

Dont most of who live outside of the district have their own wells? Why not install the equipment to pump and pressurize the water so that in the event of a fire, it can be used to extinguish the fire. My mom lives in what is known as a PC-10, She has this system installed. Its just one little thing you can do to help yourself.

"There is no structural fire department in that area."

Yeah no kidding. I used to hunt that are extensively. Take if from me you opinionated transplants that seem to have all the answers: There is *no* fire protection out there. Even w/o any weather, getting out there is a good 30 minute drive if you hurry and in that time, *any* structure is going to burn to the ground.

Huneybee wrote on Dec 31, 2008 10:24 PM:

HELLO!!! These people just lost their home and all their belonging, so why don't you all try and be adults and find something else to gripe about!!!!!! What is wrong with you?????????????? GET A GRIP ON LIFE!!!!!

TO: Milukcoma rezident. What are you insinuating, you pay property taxes?Yes, you pay a little bit for CFPA as do I, even though I DO pay taxes into a fire district. Just paying your taxes does not entitle you to anything special. You receive services based on what taxing district boundary you live within. No one was saying you don't pay taxes, just no fire district up there. And yes, maybe you knew it but a lot just think that someone will come anyway.

VETCOP wrote on Dec 31, 2008 11:47 AM:

This is a good example of "Blame it on someone else"! What I am hearing is some folks would put the lives of firefighters at risk, who are NOT trained or equiped to fight structure fires, over a structure that is already a loss. You may not believe it but putting water on a structure does not renew it to it's original state. CFPA has strict policies on what they can do in a structure fire situation. You can not replace a human life! With the chemicals and hazards of a structure or vehicle fire, and not the proper equipment and training is just a bad mix. Give these guys a break and quit blaming them for not haveing protection for structures.

nbgirl wrote on Dec 31, 2008 10:56 AM:

Hey ODOTTER-- CFPA has no union representation.

Milukcoma rezident wrote on Dec 31, 2008 6:21 AM:

To the posts that said "Move within the fire district" you havent got a clue as to why we choose to live where we do.We are all aware of the fact that there is no protection for home-owners up here and yet we all pay property taxes too.Our little community is devastated at the thought that our neighbors have lost their home and lively hood and might have to move to town. Our prayers go out to them and hope they recover from their loss soon.

wow wrote on Dec 30, 2008 9:39 PM:

so "just me" you said they had 200 gallons. do you realize just how much water it takes to put out a house fire? you guessed it, WAY more than 200 gallons. you would probably be made at CFPA if they used the water they had on the house and then the forest caught on fire.

Surprised wrote on Dec 30, 2008 7:05 PM:

Wow, With the way people are today, I am surprised that no one is complaining about the two Sheriff Deputies that responded.

Fred Clauson wrote on Dec 30, 2008 6:38 PM:

I think that most of the commits on hear are stupid. I have been a wild land fire fighter for a few years as well as a volunteer Structual firefighter there is a lot of differace with both. the equipment for one the training for another and the legal complications are yet another. the only thing about the two fires is that they are fires. Please don't jump on any of the fire departments they save lives and property every time they go out or at least try too.

Meghan W wrote on Dec 30, 2008 4:55 PM:

Yes, as an Allegany resident, we all know that we do not have any structural fire coverage. Knowing this does not make this situation any easier & I truly am sorry for my neighbors loss. But people come on, you should not be angry with the firefighters doings, they did their job and thats all we can ask for. If this would have been summertime, there could be a bigger mess on our hands a lot more difficult for coos forest to control.

Support your firefighters wrote on Dec 30, 2008 4:51 PM:

While if feel bad that these people lost their home, and to have to stand their and watch their home burn is horrible, imagine how the fire fighters must have felt. They choose service as their life's work, and were not able to help. Even if the structure had still been standing, Coos Forest could not help. That is bureaucracy. Tax bases determine who gets fire, police, and other protection as well as schools. Figure out how to fix the system, don't bash the people who are trying to do the best they can.

GET AN EDUCATION wrote on Dec 30, 2008 4:50 PM:

When you live outside a fire district that means that YOU DON'T HAVE FIRE PROTECTION... Simple as that. Be smart, live within a fire district if you want fire protection. Don't expect the tax dollars that others contribute and you don't to come to your rescue. And yes, CFPA can NOT fight a structure fire. What do you think 200 gals would do anyway? If you want better fire protection, MOVE TO TOWN. Everyone is sorry people lost their home, but I am not sorry that the fire department did not come.

FireGuy wrote on Dec 30, 2008 3:37 PM:

Hey, yahoos: Did you bother to read the entire article?

These people choose to live outside any fire protection district. They don't pay fire taxes. Their choice, their consequences. CFPA does not provide structural fire protection - they are not a "fire department", or did you bother to do any research on that organization.

Structural firefighter wrote on Dec 30, 2008 2:56 PM:

There is a big difference between wildland fire fighting and structural firefighting. Wildland firefighters do not carry the needed equipment or personal protective equipment needed to fight a house fire, just like most structural fire fighters do not carry the right equipment for wildland fires. Don't jump all over Coos Forest for not doing anything. read the article and Nils said there was nothing left when they got there. Hopefully the owners had fire insurance. Too bad they lived too far out to have fire protection. And I personally know several of the CFPA guys and yes they are very caring and would do anything they could do to help out an individual.

Perplexed wrote on Dec 30, 2008 2:11 PM:

HUH? That just sounds crazy. Aren't firefighters usually trying to get the fire out "BEFORE" it becomes a brush fire that could then lead to more structural fires???? Wow, glad I live in town and by the way does everyone living up there know that they have NO firefighters to protect their homes, just their hedges. Scary Stuff. We shouldn't blame these firemen personally though because obviously this is what they are ordered to do by whoever makes those decisions.

just me wrote on Dec 30, 2008 1:43 PM:

So why did they even bother coming out and wasting the fuel? What a travesty! They had a 200 gallon tank of water and didn't even make an attempt so they just stood there and watched? My heart goes out to these people who lost everything they owned in this world. It is really too bad that this happened the way it did. May God Bless.

Coos County Resident wrote on Dec 30, 2008 1:31 PM:

Yeah, CFPA is so busy fighting all those brush & forest fires this time of the year that they can't pour a stream of water on a burning house.

Coos Bay Kid wrote on Dec 30, 2008 1:24 PM:

You guys have the same problem as the majority of the population. These people chose to live in Allegany. They knew that there is no fire dept. Stop blaming others for your problems. There is obvious risk involved when you live that far away from civilization. I'm sorry to hear about this loss.

Give me a break wrote on Dec 30, 2008 1:08 PM:

What do you think the FIRE DEPARTMENT said?? Why weren't they there? They said simply, that is not in our district, call someone else, it's not my problem. At least CFPA responded! And yes, they would only put out the rose bush that caught fire, becuase that is all they ARE LEGALY ALLOWED TO DO.

You have no idea wrote on Dec 30, 2008 1:05 PM:

What you are commenting about. There are legal reasons why " they are not sturctural firefighters" Would you call a dentist to do brain surgery? They are both doctors after all, considering the dumb comment you both made, you probelby would. My comment to the renter/owner of the now burt to the ground home, if you want sturctural fire protection, live in an area that has it. How about next time they call you fight fire.

Wow wrote on Dec 30, 2008 12:44 PM:

Don't you people understand anything? They do not have the equipment to fight structure fires. I know these guys and the last thing they want to do is just stand there and do nothing. They do what they can. You whine and cry and you don't even know what you're crying about. Are any of you willing to pay extra taxes to maintain a fire district up there? I didn't think so! How about you become a volunteer firefighter and help out.

Classic example wrote on Dec 30, 2008 11:53 AM:

“We are not structural firefighters...."

What a fine example of 'not my problem' thinking.

Thats so Wrong wrote on Dec 30, 2008 11:26 AM:

So if you had gotten there any earlier and there had been structure left to the home, you would have stood there and watched it burn to the ground? Nonsense! What if your child, wife/husband/father/mother/bestfriend etc..... were visiting that household? You would not lend a helping hand. I cannot believe that you would let someone you love, let alone another person with breath still in their lungs burn to the ground. Even if the house were empty, you would not assist in saving at least one piece of memorabilia that these people lived for? I can't believe you would stand there and wait for a rose bush to catch fire.
