Local Recap: Reedsport girls fall to Toledo in tournament championship game

Toledo held Reedsport’s girls basketball team to nine points in the first half and cruised to a 59-29 win in the championship game of the Dune Country Classic on Saturday.

Tournament most valuable player Megan White had 17 points for the Boomers, who led 32-9 at the break after Reedsport made just one field goal in the opening two quarters.

Allie Marchant, another all-tournament selection, added nine points for the Boomers.

Eden Huebner had 10 points to lead the Braves and also was the leading rebounder in the tournament with 19 over the two games. She also was named to the all-tournament team, along with Chelsea Hitchcock, who led the Braves to their opening-round win over Taft.

The other members of the all-tournament team were Shelby Gilpin of Yoncalla and Ashley Taylor of Taft.

Yoncalla beat Taft 70-20 in the third-place game. Heather McDonald had 23 points, including four 3-pointers, for  the Eagles, while Gilpin added 10 points.

Taylor had eight points for Taft in the loss.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Braves take third

Reedsport beat Yoncalla 58-42 in the consolation game at the Dune Country Classic.

Cody Savey had 17 points and seven steals and Ismael Osorio added 16 points in the victory for the Braves.

Reedsport trailed 24-22 at halftime, but grabbed the lead by outscoring the Eagles 17-6 in the third quarter and then shot 8-for-10 from the foul line in the fourth quarter.

Jeff Wilmarth had eight points and Brice Young had seven points and pulled down 13 rebounds for the Braves.

Kyle Arter had nine points for Yoncalla.

In the championship game, Taft beat Toledo 39-29.

Tournament MVP Ryan Willoughby had 12 points for Taft in the win, while Chase Kinion led Toledo with 12 points.

Joining Willoughby on the first team were teammate Kyle Hindman, Toledo’s Kinion and Kamron Sjostrom, Savey and Yoncalla’s Colton Kingery.
