NB woman's child care license on hold

The state suspended a North Bend child-care provider’s license after police arrested her on child abuse charges.

Kitty Lake, field manager for the state Employment Department’s child care division, said Heidi Moore lost her privileges after police arrested her on first-degree criminal mistreatment and third-degree assault charges Dec. 19.

Capt. Ron Akers of the North Bend police said the incident prompting the arrest involved one of Moore’s own children.

Moore was taken to Coos County jail, where she was booked. She was released on her own recognizance on Monday.

The case hasn’t proceeded to the courts yet. Coos County District Attorney R. Paul Frasier said he is still waiting for the full reports from the police. The state’s also interested in the police findings.

“What happens with that investigation will determine our next step,” Lake said.

She said Moore first received state certification as a family child-care provider June 29, 2007, and was recertified a year later. She would have been allowed to care for as many as 16 children, Lake said.

“That’s the max,” she said.

As a child care provider, Moore has to be enrolled in the criminal history registry, Lake said. She said there is a list of relevant crimes that could lead to a provider not being eligible to retain a license. Lake wasn’t sure if assault or criminal mistreatment are among those charges.

Akers said the arrest was made in the 1000 block of Newmark Street after officers originally responded to Hillcrest Elementary School to assist the Department of Human Services.

A World reporter’s attempt to interview Moore on Friday was unsuccessful. A man who answered the phone at the residence of Steven and Heidi Moore said Heidi Moore wasn’t home, he didn’t know when she would be back, and he didn’t know whether she would be willing to comment.
