COQUILLE — Coquille’s boys basketball team has just a couple of players with extensive varsity experience.
That proved costly Monday night, as visiting Phoenix held off the Red Devils 48-40 in a nonleague game.
The Red Devils trailed by just five points early in the final quarter, but Phoenix went into a stall game, forcing Coquille to foul, and then either made the free throws or rebounded their misses.
“When you foul for profit you’re always gambling,” Coquille coach Dan Cumberland said.
Though the game ended in defeat, Cumberland saw a lot to be happy with.
“That’s a pretty decent team,” he said of the Pirates. “I’m pretty happy. I see some baby steps this group is taking.”
The Red Devils led 13-8 after the first quarter, and were tied twice in the third quarter before Phoenix finally pulled ahead.
“This team continues to struggle with a lack of experience at the varsity level,” Cumberland said.
Coquille still is looking for consistency scoring and better defense overall, but had solid defense and especially strong rebounding in the opening half.
“In the first half, we were in it because of our boarding,” Cumberland said.
The Red Devils held a 20-14 edge on boards in the first half, but the Pirates turned that statistic around in the second half, in particular on the offensive end. Phoenix finished with a 29-26 rebounding advantage. The boards off the missed free throws were particularly damaging.
“That was the difference,” Cumberland said.
Phoenix stretched a five-point lead to 13 before the Red Devils scored the final five points.
Matthew Lapat had 12 points to lead Phoenix, while Alex Young had 11, Dom Ralls 10 and Kyle Treadway nine. They combined to make 17 of 23 free throws in the game.
Joe Harris and Daniel Muntifering had nine points each for Coquille and Joseph Savala added eight. Harris also had a game-high nine rebounds, though eight of those came in the first half.
Coquille was woeful from the field, shooting 14-for-41. The Red Devils made 10 of their 12 free throws, but didn’t get to the line, another thing Cumberland would like — more consistency on offense and a willingness to attack the basket.
“We’re still gaining,” Cumberland said. “I think this group will keep getting better and better and better.”
Coquille now has a week to prepare for its Sunset Conference opener against defending league champion Cascade Christian.
