North Bend police are investigating an armed robbery of a convenience store that closely mirrored a holdup at a Coos Bay thrift store earlier this week.

Officers responded to Airport Heights Market, 2750 Virginia Ave., at about 4 p.m. Friday after receiving a report of a robbery.

An employee was alone in the store when a man entered, brandished a knife, demanded money and then fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, a press release said.

Officers from both North Bend and Coos Bay police departments searched the area to no avail.

The employee told police the suspect was about six feet tall, had dark brown hair and a medium build. He was spotted by a video surveillance camera wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, sunglasses and a camouflage-colored baseball cap.

Coos Bay police responded to a similar robbery at Quiet Circle Thrift Store on Wednesday. A brown-haired suspect wearing a gray sweatshirt threatened employees with a knife, and took off with money, a purse and clothes.

Officers from the two departments consider the cases related.

“We do believe this to be the same person,” said North Bend Officer Jon Bohanan.

With the economic downturn, we WILL see an increase in violent crime. Our small towns are NOT immuned. There is NOT enough law inforcement. I was robbed a full"Locked" tank of gas one night and that is when we were at an all time HIGH for fuel, that really hurt and I was told to fill out a police report, I did and that is where it ended. My mail and printed checks were stolen and some were strewn all over East Bay road, again fill out a report.. No one called related to the reports, when I called they were too short staff for these types of complaints. I was out time and money tracking down my credit cards and closing my bank account etc..that is only the BEGINNING! However in 35 years of driving I have been stopped 3 times. 2 of them Coos County, neither was speeding or drugs, "just checking" my break lights and violation of new seat belt law.....that takes priority over Robbery...

If he is hard up and needs money and cannot find a job there's other ways to get it. By viedo, looks like he isn't starving, his body mass looks like he's eating healthly somewhere. May need it for bills. There's people on the street with signs, asking for our money. Some give to them even knowing it is most likely a scam. Feeling a few dollars isn't going to kill us. We proably spend that amount on coffee or ect. thinking no big deal giving it up for one day to help someone. You know the saying none can rise so high that they cannot fall. I myself when driving by pray for them sometimes, and thank God for what I have. Some of them make alot of money begging. This knifer could hold a sign and do the same as them, grant you its not very flattering, but at least he isn't holding someones life in his hands just a sign. He might be surprised how much he could really make doing it. It's a better chose than the one he has choosen. No excuse for choosing violence when there is that choice.

E------holy cow..yeah...right. How about the destitute pick up their lazy butts and get a job. They are out there, all we have to do is displace the illegals and there will be plenty....oh ..wait....you probably are a champion of illegal "rights" as well...

Great Attitude. I guess you should stay home and watch Oprah. Meanwhile, I'm gonna go make money and laugh at you guys making excuses. Times are tough, I know, but you gotta work harder and smarter than the other guy or your always going to need an excuse. What did you use last year?

Shopkeepers, an aluminium baseball bat will take out this loser. However, for sheer stopping power, a .44 magnum with hollow points is a better choice and will take out a Swiss Army knife. Guaranteed. Try to hit the legs so we can all read about the excuses this loser will give for his crimes.

stupid people wrote on Dec 22, 2008 1:03 PM:

Some people are really stupid. There are way to many people in this area that have Concealed Handgun Licenses and legally carry a firearm for protection to be doing stuff like this. Hopefully this guy get arrested before he pulls a knife on the wrong person and gets him self killed.

What a loser wrote on Dec 22, 2008 10:05 AM:

It's only a matter of time before this loser finds out taking a knife to a gunfight was a bad decision.

Let me guess, Gov't subsidized programs. Why do you people always want hand outs. Wouldn't it b a great world if everyone was responsible for their actions. That this guy said "I need to get a job, before this guy says, i need that more than you do, so im gonna steal it." Seriously, did he make away with a life changing amount. Quit trying to look for answers, they are within you.

People need to take the time and try to see things from his point of view. He is probably just trying to take care of his family? Maybe he just needs love?

E wrote on Dec 21, 2008 11:58 AM:

Hahah! "Get a job!!!" Yeah.. 500,000 people laid off in NOVEMBER alone.. Get a job? How about get some social programs that help destitute people turn towards something else than crime?

Anyway, I can guarantee you that street people know who this guy is and arnt saying anything. CB Police need to use their street informants here, not good gift giving clothes volunteers for the homeless.

Concerned NB Resident wrote on Dec 20, 2008 1:19 PM:

I know that times are tough, but to rob two places, for whatever reason, putting lives in danger, for the money is down right low.

Let's all work together as a community to help our local police departments find/arrest this guy and not let him get away with this.
