He was known as the Coos County Animal Shelter’s “Wal-Mart greeter.”

Abe, the happy Labrador always had a wave — well, wag — for everyone who stopped by the shelter south of Coos Bay.

“He never disliked anybody,” said Shelter Manager Wendy Martinez. “He never met a stranger. Everyone was a friend.”

Don’t worry. Abe’s OK. The shelter’s resident dog, who came in as a stray almost a year and a half ago, has been reunited with his long-lost owner.

Last week, a woman stopped at the shelter to drop off a stray puppy. She was surprised to notice a photo of Abe — Magnum as his owner knows him — hanging on the wall. She went home, returning with papers to confirm Abe was her dog. They left together that afternoon.

Martinez said workers and volunteers, who thought of the big friendly dog as the shelter’s mascot, have mixed feelings about losing him.

“We’re happy that he is home,” Martinez said. “But we are very sad because we miss him.”

Despite several attempts, The World was unable to contact Abe’s owner.

When Abe arrived at the shelter, volunteers guessed the big black Lab with a graying muzzle was about 12 years old. They weren’t too far off. They learned he’s probably somewhere between 13 and 15 years old.

Martinez said when he was brought in, he couldn’t go in the holding pens like the rest of the dogs. Arthritis would have made it difficult for him to walk underneath the doors separating the inside and outside portion of the pens. So, the old guy had the run of the place and the time to win the hearts of workers and visitors alike.

He had his own warm, fluffy bed and plenty of people gave him attention and medication for his arthritis. Martinez even started taking him home as the nights got colder.

His only discomfort was when workers cleaned the puppy cages. They let the pups run around the shelter.

“They always wanted to go play with the big black pillow,” Martinez said.

Abe had different thoughts.

“He would growl and bark at them as if to say, ‘Leave me alone you little whippersnappers.’” Martinez said.

He may have had no patience for rambunctious puppies, but he did take a special liking to one shelter volunteer. He memorized her schedule, Martinez said. She came by twice a week, and those two days were the only days he would go sit out front, waiting.

“Finally it dawned on me what he was doing,” Martinez said.

Abe knew her car and would run, or his version of running, out to say hi. Then he would follow her on her dog walks, taking a break halfway through.

When Abe was originally lost, his owner had called to report him missing. He had been microchipped, but the owner contact information was never registered to the chip. Martinez said the registration task slipped through the cracks between the owner and Abe’s veterinarian.

Knowing that, Martinez offered advice. She encourages dog owners to get confirmation that registration is done once they have their pets microchipped or be sure to do it themselves to prevent a similar situation.

The owner clearly states that she did everything she could to find her dog, she called the shelter, she called the police, and yes she walked thru the shelter. The story says that Abe/Magnum was 13-15 years old if my (very) old dog disapeared, I called all the right places and made a trip to the shelter, I would have assumed the worse (my dog had gone to die) it's sad, but I wouldn't have continued to call and keep my family's hopes up for 2 years (especially when my dog had a chip)!!

Abe, you made our days easier at the shelter. You made us smile when our hearts wanted to me sad or mad. I loved walking you and especially enjoyed our return walks when you would plop in the middle of the little stream by the roadside. I spent many days brushing, walking and just hanging out with you, I miss you my friend. You are a blessing of the best kind. Many happy days with your family, hope to see you again someday soon.

I am soo happy for Abe! I have been in and out of the shelter working with a program and he was the best old man! I hope he is lounging next to the heater snoring!

I would like to say congrats on getting your dog back. Back in Feb. our older dog went missing. We contacted the Shelter, without luck. 4-5ths later, a woman put an ad in the paper asking if anyone was missing this certain breed of dog, I called hoping by some miracle that is was our long lost dog, but ended up getting a call from ANIMAL CONTROL...they were trying to set me up for a dog bite case involving the same breed of dog. For one, my dog was soo old he didn't even HAVE teeth. Second my dog was neutered, the dog they had wasn't. The officer was soo sure of himself that he put me in tears, telling me that it WAS my dog and that it was dead. He wanted me to claim the remains, I refused explaining to him that it WASN'T my dog. Long story short, I am now being sued for an animal that doesn't even belong to me because I contacted an ad in the paper with the hopes for a miracle.

It's pretty amazing to me that it took so long to find Magnum when he was in sooo many publications of the shelter's..including the website. Let's all learn a valuable lesson from this dog owner's mistake: a phone call is not enough, take the 5 minutes and walk thru the shelter yourself when your dog is missing.

I'm Magnums owner, I would like to add to my previous post: Of Course we checked the Shelter... We were told that Magnum was not a dog at the shelter at that time....We guess that he must have been held at someones home for a period of time, How long I dont know. We also contacted North Bend PD and alerted them to his dissapearance, We never heard from them regarding his whereabouts. Most likely because no one alerted them! Long story short we are very glad to have him home and he is VERY happy to be home and is settling in nicely!

I'm a little confused why it took two years to be reunited with the dog, but I'm happy he's home and this story definitely gives me the push to double check my dog's micro chip information. I hope Magnum is happy and doing well!

i dont understand wrote on Dec 17, 2008 10:07 PM:

I don't understand why it took so long for Abe to be located, since it's common knowledge here that the shelter is the first place you check! Glad he was reunited, just puzzled as to how it took soooo long. :D

I got tears reading this. What a Christmas present. So Heartwarming.

Sabrina wrote on Dec 17, 2008 5:25 PM:

If that had been my dog, microchip or not, I'd have been checking the shelter daily.

Deb wrote on Dec 17, 2008 4:11 PM:

Stories like this heartwarming one are so refreshing. God Bless all who contribute to the comfort and care of all animals. Bark on, Magnum...you are so loved! Thanks, World for running this story of hope.

Thanks To all the Warm People who Love our Magnum. We are so glad to have him home and he has settled in just as if 2 years have never gone by. I just want to ad that all of this could have been avoided if the proper paperwork had been mailed, and I cant stress the importaince of double checking with the microchip manufacture yourself every year to make sure they have all the info they need to get your pet home SAFE!
Thanks Again
