The Southwestern Oregon Community College men’s basketball team beat NWAACC South Region rival Lane for third place in the Dale Bates Classic at Eugene on Sunday.
The Lakers beat the Titans 92-87, with four players scoring in double figures.
Justin King had 22 points and eight rebounds to lead the Lakers. Ryan Flynn had 18 points, Zach Bell 17 and Alex Demith 13. Deleon McBride and Tyler Bryant each scored eight.
“It was a very intense game,” said Southwestern coach Trevor Hoppe. “Any time you play a conference opponent, it doesn’t matter what time of year, it’s going to be an intense game.”
Hoppe said the Lakers made a few stops and got big rebounds late in the game to preserve the victory, something they didn’t do in a loss a night earlier.
Lane had five players in double digits, led by Stephen Christensen’s 18 points.
The Lakers lost a 117-112 shootout to a Lane alumni team in the tournament semifinals Saturday.
Demith and Zach Bell had 21 points each and Bryant added 10. Flynn scored 13 and McBride and Lee Van Pelt had 12 each.
The Lakers shot 54 percent from the floor and made nine 3-pointers, but Lane had 14 treys and also 10 more free throws than Southwestern. Brandon Wood scored 39 for the Lane squad.
“You think when you get six guys in double figures, you’d win the game, but they just had a little more firepower,” Hoppe said.
In the opening game of the tournament, Southwestern beat Warner Pacific’s junior varsity team 86-75.
King had a huge game with 26 points and 16 rebounds. Flynn added 15 points, Bell 14 and Bryant 10.
King was named to all-tournament team, and Hoppe came away happy with the group’s effort.
“From this weekend, I think we can walk away saying we competed in every game,” Hoppe said. “We’re getting better and continuing to work hard. That’s what we need to be doing this time of year. It’s about getting better each game, each weekend, so when January and February come around, we’re ready for conference.”
The Lakers host an eight-team NWAACC crossover tournament this weekend, starting Friday.
“It’s going to be exciting to be at home,” Hoppe said.
The Lakers face Edmonds in the final game Friday, tipping off at 7 p.m. The other games include Pierce vs. Umpqua at 1 p.m., Treasure Valley against Bellevue at 3 p.m. and Blue Mountain meeting Tacoma at 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens each day.
Women take consolation
Southwestern’s women took the consolation title at the Edmonds Winter Classic when the Lakers’ foe didn’t show up for the game.
Southwestern beat Everett 63-44 in the consolation semifinals and then the Washington Athletic Club, a traveling team of former college players, forfeited Sunday’s game.
Against Everett, Southwestern jumped out to a 31-18 halftime lead and finished strong.
“We played pretty well down the stretch, shot the ball well and played pretty good defense and rebounded well,” said Southwestern coach Mike Herbert.
Rachel Richardson, who was named to the all-tournament team, had 16 points for Southwestern. Rose Mattson added eight points, while Rachel Matthews and Kristen Lorenzo had seven each.
Everett shot just 26 percent and Southwestern had 19 steals, though the Lakers also turned the ball over 24 times.
In the opening game of the tournament, Whatcom beat the Lakers 67-57.
“We made a run at them at the end,” said Herbert, whose team pulled within three points late. “They made their free throws at the end and we didn’t make any shots to get closer.”
The difference was the first half, when Whatcom took a 36-29 lead.
“They just killed us in the first half on the offensive boards and we couldn’t recover,” Herbert said.
Richardson had 15 points — all on 3-pointers — and Matthews added nine for the Lakers. Jillian DeGuzman and Caitlin Killinger had eight each.
“It was a good weekend all-in-all,” Herbert said Sunday. “I wish we could have played the third game this morning.”
