The Coquille City Council has five candidates in line to fill a vacant City Council seat.

After Monday interviews councilors had planned to select someone to fill the four-year term, but opted to think about their selection until the Jan. 5 meeting.

The candidates are Amanda Davidson, John Spencer, Matt Muenchrath, Dian Courtright and Nikole Graham. None of the hopefuls said they had any city government experience. Three of the candidates  — Davidson, Spencer and Courtright — had run in November’s election. When asked why they didn’t run in the election, Muenchrath and Graham said it wasn’t the right time.

Amanda Davidson

• How long in Coquille? Three years.

• Occupation: Marketing assistant, Oregon First Community Credit Union.

• Organizations: American Legion Coquille Post 36.

• Top concern: “Just that we stay on the right track.”

Davidson would like to see the Coquille Riverwalk and Coquille Dog Park projects move forward.

• Experience: Davidson said her 10 years in the U.S. Navy taught her how to work under pressure and understand how to adhere to a chain of command.

• Role of a city councilor: “I think the role is to be the voice of the people. The role is to work as a team and promote the city. To listen to people, find out what they want and try to make the best decisions that we can.”

• Goals for the city: “To keep on track. Taking it step by step is very important.” Davidson said the city should finish current projects before taking on anything new.

John Spencer

• How long in Coquille?  Two years

• Occupation: Works the graveyard shift at Roseburg Forest Products mill.

• Organizations:  Rotary Club of Coquille, Lions Club of Coquille, former member of Coquille planning commission and chamber of commerce.

• Top concern: He is concerned about Coquille’s steady decline from a vibrant city to a place with numerous empty storefronts. He wants to help market the city and draw in businesses.

• Experience: Spencer said his business and marketing experience would help Coquille. “I am hoping we can help market and create a plan for Coquille.”

• Role of a city councilor: A city councilor needs to be out in the public as much as possible, not only working in government but as a volunteer and community leader.

• Goals for the city: “I really believe that the city needs to have a plan for the city, for what it wants to look like and the businesses it wants. ... What do we want Coquille to look like 25 years from now?”

Matt Muenchrath

• How long in Coquille?  Almost 7 years

• Occupation: Attorney and  municipal judge for the city.

• Organizations:  Coquille Valley Elks, Oregon State Bar, Coquille Rotary, Oregon Whitewater Association, Coquille Soccer Club.

• Top concern: “The way that the city of Coquille is perceived by its citizens  and ... by the state.” He said city government needs to work hard to make it citizens feel good about where they live again.

• Experience: Muenchrath said going to law school taught him to analyze an argument. He also studied land use and administrative law, which helped him understand how local governments operate.

• Role of a city councilor: “As a city councilor, I’m a representative at large and a steward of public funds. It’s the people’s and they need to be reassured often that it is being spent in the way they want.”

• Goals for the city: He wants to see store fronts filled with businesses, more community policing, good communication with citizens, more buyers for the old G-P mill site and more community events.

Dian Courtright

• How long in Coquille? Almost 30 years

• Occupation: Self-employed

• Organizations:  Operation Coquille Board, Rural Organizing Project Board, and Concerned Citizens of Coquille.

• Top concern: “That it continues to grow and be viable and make it through the tough economic times that are coming.”

She wants to see developments and businesses come to town that will keep money in the community.

• Experience: Courtright said she didn’t understand what was being asked, but said: “Just being around people a lot.”

• Role of a city councilor: Courtright said the council’s job is oversee city government and make sure to know all that is happening in the community.

“Doing what you can to make the city a great place to live.”

• Goals for the city: “Like everyone else, I’m really interested in the G-P site ... getting that going in a way that will benefit us in the long-run.”

Courtright said another reachable goal was fostering more community involvement in city matters.

Nikole Graham

• How long in Coquille? Almost 10 years

• Occupation: Dispatcher for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management

• Organizations:  Girl Scouts of America, Red Cross blood drive coordinator, city Budget Committee.

• Top concern: “Getting young people involved in the city.”

• Experience: Her time working with the Girl Scouts of America and the group’s focus on giving back to the community would help her in serving Coquille’s citizens.

• Role of a city councilor: to be upstanding members of the community and role models.

• Goals for the city: Graham wants to see more successful businesses put down roots in Coquille.

“I want to see the population grow, and schools grow.”

this is sad. wrote on Jan 6, 2009 10:27 AM:

I grew up believing that the vote of the people is what elections is are about. Why was this decided by 6 people ? When we just had a election. Where everybody had a chance to vote !!! NOT THE 6 PEOPLE, WHO WE VOTED IN. Just how did they get their GLORIOUS positions ? They were VOTED IN BY THE CITIZENS OF COQUILLE. This MESS is corrupting our voting system. And to get around the system they appoint a lawyer, GO FIGURE.

Hey Hurry January 5th - Noone said you had to read this did they?

HURRY JANUARY 5TH wrote on Dec 23, 2008 6:27 PM:

THIS IS GETTING PETTY, PETTY, PETTY. WHAT A BUNCH OF GARBAGE REMARKS.
I SURE DON'T KNOW DIAN, BUT I SURE HOPE SHE IS SELECTED TO BE ON OUR COUNCIL, GIVE EVERY BODY A BREAK.

Cory wrote on Dec 23, 2008 4:53 PM:

Two peas in a pod eh??!! Ha! Where have you seen us hang out lately? Huh? Absolutely nowhere! What a joke. I wasn't trying to "fool" anyone. Just stating what I believe in.

Now just where did I mention any criteria for living in Coquille for 30 years? Can you read??? I said she lived here for 30 years and in my opinion she had more experience with this town. Don't put words in my mouth. Keep standing behind your anonymous names and say whatever you wish. At least you know who I am. And that's a fact. I stand behind what I say. Guess you can't. Sad. What? Can't take the heat? Tsk Tsk.

TO CORY wrote on Dec 23, 2008 2:25 PM:

Oh so the criteria for running for City Council is: you must live in Coquille for at least 30 years? and you must run around town door to door pretending to be something your not?
PLEASE! WHAT A JOKE, people are not ignorant as to what is going on!

To Be Strong wrote on Dec 23, 2008 2:11 PM:

You have obviously ticked Cory off!
No need to worry about it.
THE TRUTH REALLY HURTS!!! and a lot of times will bring out the IRRATIONAL and BELIGERANT BEHAVIOR in people!
She mentioned that she and Dian are no longer related, but don't be fooled, they still act like two peas in a pod!

Cory wrote on Dec 22, 2008 10:31 AM:

To Be Strong -

Thank you for correcting me. Now. Let's see. Amanda has lived in Coquille for 3 years. Dian has lived in Coquille for for 30 years. Seems Dian has more experience with this town. Amanda's top concerns are that we stay on the right track (that's good) AND that the dog park projects move forward. Dian's top concerns are that we continue to grow and make it throught the tough economic times coming and to see developments and businesses come to town to keep money in our community. Hmm. Dog park more important? I think not.

Be Strong wrote on Dec 22, 2008 8:23 AM:

Yes, Cory...at least one other candidate did go door to door. Amanda Davidson knocked on our door one afternoon and it was a pleasure to meet her. Just stating facts...

TO AGREE TO BE STRONG wrote on Dec 21, 2008 6:26 PM:

I strongly disagree with you. Kathy Hagen knew what was going on when it came to reaves and his department. And that it needed fixing. Hell, Dian might of gotten ALL OF HER VOTES.

Cory wrote on Dec 20, 2008 12:25 PM:

To Nemisis-

Ok, for starters I am well aware why people don't put their real names on here (as you so well say...duh). And as for your "thinking" I'm so "Pro-Dian" here's a little clue for ya.....we aren't related anymore....again "duh". And further my cause - you'll have to elaborate a bit more on that one. What cause? And just so you know....I think Dian should have the city council position BECAUSE I think she worked hard for it and has more knowledge of how the city council works. Remember she is the one who went door to door - anyone else that applied do that? Oh yeah - and "let me tell you" sounds like you are the one having troubles thinking outside the narrow little box.

Clueless In Coquille wrote on Dec 20, 2008 5:50 AM:

My Daddy used to say, "Most times you get what you deserve."

More experience, education or tenure isn't necessarily good or bad.

Given some of the odd Coquille decisions that can be laid at the feet of the City Council and the City Administration, doesn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy about who the current council will select.

We need more flashing LED stop signs - right! We need to have great arguments about cutting down a tree in front of the library - right! We need more business fees on fuel retailers while claiming we need to attract more businesses - right!

We need a Mayor who actually understands what form of government Coquille has!!! It is not a strong mayor government.

Lots of luck, Coquille! We get what we deserve . . .

Agree with Be Strong wrote on Dec 19, 2008 11:29 PM:

Also note that the council is asking that you contact them with your thoughts.

Instead of complaining about the laspe in the process go ahead and explain why you want Dian.

**Oops, maybe there is no good reasons--so you want to find the legal loophole and get in by the backdoor process. I see Dian and cohorts whining that she should win by votes after the council researched and found the interview was actually the legal process required by the city charter.

About as productive as protesting a grand jury decision.

Agree with Be Strong wrote on Dec 19, 2008 11:23 PM:

Kathy got a lot of votes and as her stance is quite different than Dian's, I feel most of the votes would not have gone to Dian and it could have been one of the other two candidates that would have gotten the position. Actually the council interviews brought out some refreshing views. Matt Munchraeth started off about how important it is for a community to have a positive view of itself. Quite different from Dian's negative whiney views. I think Matt's view is more likely to bring the community out of its depressing decline. Go Matt!

NEMISIS wrote on Dec 19, 2008 8:11 PM:

Cory, the reason people don't put their real name is that they don't want to be personally harassed by all the nut jobs out there. I think the reason you are so "Pro-Dian" is that you are related, (duh) and you think it will further your cause. I would rather have someone without a cause or agenda. Someone who can think outside their narrow little box. And let me tell you, it thrills me that I live outside the city limits!!!

Just Saying wrote on Dec 19, 2008 2:22 PM:

As a "common" person, I would like to be represented by someone with common sense and an education. Both are required to successfully represent all citizens. Clearly, with the other candidates to choose from, Courtright doesn't fit the bill. It is a difficult task to criticize the members of city government to no end and then turn around and say 'Can I be one of you?' Not that there was much credibility to begin with, but now it is gone entirely.

common wrote on Dec 19, 2008 9:11 AM:

Hey you can have all kinds of education, does not mean a thing, but you got to have common sense.
We need a common person to represent us on city council, not just the people who think there are in a higher class, retired chief, retired veteran officer, realtor, lawyer, etc.
Council should pick Dian and quit putting of making a decision.

Tom wrote on Dec 19, 2008 7:24 AM:

The educated choice would be Matt Muenchrath. I'd bet that he will be the next Mayor as well. He is well educated, has experience (other than being around people alot), and is an asset to this community. If he doesn't get it something is definetly fishy.

perspective wrote on Dec 18, 2008 8:43 PM:

Okay..... Education-grade 8, Affiliated Organizations-any organization that undermines city government, and law enforcement agencies. Experience-I am not sure what the job is, but I have been around a lot of people...does the mental ward count..or rehab? OKAY...would you want me as your neighbor...so why would you want me as your city councilor? and PS The coquille sentinel is run and edited by Dian's good friend, wonder why there is never any negative info about her or her oh so familiar hoodlems?

Cory wrote on Dec 18, 2008 6:46 PM:

How pathetic. You all sound like a bunch of jealous babies. At least Dian had the guts to run for the city council. And all you do is get on here and complain. Big deal...you can get on your computers and go under your anonymous names and diss her. Doesn't that make you look big? Whatever. And no. I don't need to calm down there Yahoo. Oh yes....and "paparazzi"? Wow, what a world you must live in.

MY GUESS wrote on Dec 18, 2008 2:19 PM:

My guess is, they will HAVE to choose Dian otherwise they will have to worry about the wrath they would receive from
herself and her paprazzi....they are probably tired of her picking apart the law enforcement, this might get her to quiet down a bit. lol

Just Saying wrote on Dec 18, 2008 12:42 PM:

Obvioulsy if Hagen's name hadn't been on the ballot, the votes would have been cast differently. Giving the position to the next highest vote-getter is not necessarily how people would have voted so the council is doing the right thing. The most qualified and EDUCATED candidate should be chosen.

lol wrote on Dec 18, 2008 7:37 AM:

Experience = "being around people a lot"

Wow... obviously overqualified for the position considering that VAST experience. Swear her in before a different council snaps that one up.

Be Strong wrote on Dec 17, 2008 11:51 AM:

I voted for Kathy, if her name had not been on the ballot that vote would not have gone to Dian. I am glad the council is following a different path than to just appoint 'the next runner up'. I'm not convinced Dian would have been the next runner up if so many votes had not gone to Kathy. Give Dian a couple of years and she might be a better choice. As for John Spencer...my personal opinion is he has some hidden agenda.

To Dan wrote on Dec 17, 2008 9:39 AM:

Graham has been to 9 out of the last 12 meetings and am not sure how many Muenchrath has been to Dian has been to most of them also. Amanda and John have been to maybe the last 4.

Dan wrote on Dec 17, 2008 9:29 AM:

Does anybody here know just how many council meetings, these candidates have attended in the past few years ? I go to a lot of them, have never seen, Graham or Muenchath, and have seen Davidson and Spenser only at election time. Does that tell anything to anybody ? It does me. I believe the people have already spoken, and the council should listen to the people. THAT IS THEIR JOB....

native wrote on Dec 17, 2008 8:50 AM:

Id like to know who screwed up, by putting hagens name on the ballot in the first place ? When everybody, who attends council meetings, and or reads the local Sentinel newespaper, knew Kathy couldn't run, because she lived out of town. I believe there was just a election, a little over a month ago, to fill 3 seats. The next one in line should get the seat. That is the only fair way to settle this, Let the people of Coquille have their say. Thats why we have elections. NOT SO ONLY A FEW PEOPLE, HAVE THE ONLY SAY. Why is that so difficult to understand ?

Ambrose wrote on Dec 17, 2008 8:33 AM:

Parker tells everybody Courtright is not qualified for the seat. Who does he think he is! Courtright should get the seat because she got the next highest votes.

Citizen wrote on Dec 17, 2008 12:15 AM:

The recent November election wasn't for Hagen's seat; so why does it matter who received the next highest number of votes? Courtright didn't win enough votes to win any of the available seats in the November election. Why should she slide into a seat now that she didn't win and didn't even run for at the time?

The city charter calls for the process they are going through now. I'm sure there are many people in the community of Coquille who are qualified to hold the position of city councillor who didn't run in November, for any number of reasons. Why on Earth would you hold that against them if they choose to step forward now that they see a need and they have a desire to serve the citizens of Coquille?

you must be thin skinned cory wrote on Dec 16, 2008 10:31 PM:

Don't you agree that everyone makes a typo now and again, regardless of education. Maybe yahoo just hit a nerve, and you need to calm down. The most qualified and educated should be there. After all, Kathy Hagen got plenty of votes that would have gone elsewhere. And probably not all would have went to Dian Courtright. There is that spelled to your liking?

calm down wrote on Dec 16, 2008 10:29 PM:

Just because someone was on the ballot does not necessarily make them qualified or educated. And look at Kathy Hagen, she was on the ballot for what? The school board dealt with her post haste and the council drug their feet. I hope that the most qualified and educated gets on the council. We need more knowledge, not more BS.

Yep there they go wrote on Dec 16, 2008 9:06 PM:

The Coquille city council should have appointed a new council person at the last council meeting. Not draw this out, just don't have much faith in our great city council, say one thing and do another. A dam rats nest. AMEN

Holding my breath wrote on Dec 16, 2008 9:00 PM:

To What a Shame,
Hey I am with you, seems like the higher crust people get on the council, I am for Dian Courtright she got the next highest votes. The other people should have run, election was only a month ago, they state not the right time. Diane, work hard to campaign and went door to door to meet the people of Coquille.Give her a chance, a lot of people voted for her. The Attorney will probably get appointed.

cogsville lifer wrote on Dec 16, 2008 8:18 PM:

I disagree with you yahoo... The position should go to the person with the most votes. Not a person who didn't get a single vote, hell, who didn't even run. I would hope the council would let the people who just voted in the last election, help them make their choice. Isn't that the american way ?

TO YAHOO wrote on Dec 16, 2008 4:59 PM:

Thank you for whoever you are for seeing who the wolf in lambs clothing really is!!

yahoo wrote on Dec 16, 2008 4:07 PM:

I hope the city council has the guts to select the next council person based on qualifications like education and experienve and not just who was on the last ballot. A lot of times people pay little or no attention to who is on the ballot, (i.e. the Kathy Hagen debacle) and just mark a name to be done with it. Getting Dian Countrright on the council would be like inviting a circus to the council meetings. She has already displayed a woeful lack of understanding, and brings her "paparazzi" friends with her to disrupt meetings. Not a good choice for any council. GO with the more level headed, educated choice, PLEASE!!!

That is very important! Anyone and everyone that was upset with the assumption of the empty seat needs to call!
DON'T SETTLE!!! It is imperative to our community!

What a Shame wrote on Dec 16, 2008 1:47 PM:

My vote would go to John Spencer or for Dian Courtright. There is enough business type on the counsel now. We need someone in there that represents the working person for a change and get away from "that is the way we have always done it" thinking. As a former counsel member myself, sometimes you have to make tough decisions and I think that these two people are the ones to do that for the citizens of Coquille. I think a lot of the voting decisions that some of the city counselers vote on today are made because the counseler tends to have his vote decision go towards how that vote would affect only a small handful of citizens when the vote should go towards how it would affect the entire city or it entire population.

SALLY wrote on Dec 16, 2008 1:42 PM:
