Emergency personnel respond to an accident on Cape Arago Highway on Saturday afternoon. One man was arrested and three people were taken to Bay Area Hospital.
A Coos Bay man was arrested on numerous charges, including assault, following a trip to the hospital after his vehicle crashed into another vehicle on Cape Arago Highway Saturday afternoon.
According to an Oregon State Police press release, at about 1:35 p.m., the accident was reported near Driftwood Lane.
Shaun Nix, 34, was southbound on Cape Arago Highway and turned left in front of a northbound vehicle, the release said. Nix fled the scene and witnesses reported they saw him enter his nearby residence. When Nix failed to answer the door, it was forced open by police and he was found hiding in the bathroom and taken into custody. Marijuana plants were found growing in the back room.
Nix was evaluated by medical personnel and cleared. He was charged with failure to perform the duties of a driver — injury, failure to perform the duties of a driver — property, reckless driving, second- and third-degree assault and unlawful manufacture of marijuana. He was also cited on charges of driving while suspended, driving uninsured, a dangerous left turn and unlawful possession of less than an ounce of marijuana.
Following his arrest, Nix complained of increasing pain. Nix and the two occupants of the other vehicle were taken to Bay Area Hospital. Nix was examined and released, then taken to Coos County jail, where he remains on a probation violation.
No further information was available on the occupants of the other vehicle at press time.
