NEW YORK — The New York Yankees reeled in another pitcher with a rich offer, reaching agreement with free agent A.J. Burnett on a five-year contract Friday.
CC Sabathia and the Yankees made a deal for $161 million over seven years on Wednesday during the winter meetings.
But after missing the playoffs following a 13-year run, the Yankees again showed they were more than willing to shell out big bucks for pitching.
FoxSports.com and
ESPN.com reported Burnett’s deal was worth $82.5 million.
Burnett’s agreement was confirmed by the office of his agent, Darek Braunecker.
Burnett won 10 of his last 12 decisions and finished 18-10 with a 4.07 ERA for Toronto. He set career highs in wins, strikeouts (231) and innings (221 1-3).
Blue Jays sign Clement
TORONTO — The Blue Jays signed former All-Star right-hander Matt Clement to a minor league contract on Friday with an invitation to spring training.
He went 13-6 with a 4.57 ERA in 32 starts in his All-Star season in 2005 with the Boston Red Sox. Clement has not pitched in the majors since 2006 because of shoulder problems.
Ibanez joins Phillies
PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Phillies reached a preliminary agreement with outfielder Raul Ibanez on a three-year contract worth about $30 million.
The agreement is subject to Ibanez passing a physical, a baseball official said Friday, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the contract was not yet finalized.
The 36-year-old Ibanez, who takes over in left field for Pat Burrell, batted .293 last season for Seattle with 43 doubles, 23 homers and 110 RBIs.

AMES, Iowa — Iowa State coach Gene Chizik is in the running for the Auburn job, Cyclones athletic director Jamie Pollard said Friday.
Pollard acknowledged that Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs recently contacted him to speak with Chizik about the Tigers vacancy. Pollard said in a statement that his understanding is that Chizik has met with Auburn officials and is a serious candidate for the job.
Chizik was the defensive coordinator at Auburn from 2002-04. The Tigers allowed a national-low 11.3 points per game in 2004 en route to an unbeaten season.
Chizik has gone just 5-19 in two seasons at Iowa State, but was regarded among the nation’s hottest young coaches when he took the job.
