Marshfield’s girls basketball team got a huge early season win, beating No. 9 Crescent Valley 40-28 at Pirate Palace on Friday.
The Pirates won with tough defense and a good inside game, something lacking in the team’s earlier games.
Natalie Caffey led the Pirates with nine points, while fellow posts Jessica Hockema and Mel Stout added six each.
“The three posts combined for 21 points, which is more than half our points, and that’s what we’re going to need to be competitive in our league this year,” Marshfield coach Debbie Dunbar said.
The teams were tied at 9 after the first quarter, but Marshfield allowed just nine points over the next two quarters.
“We really started picking it up in the second quarter and never let up the last three,” Dunbar said.
Megan Meador had all her points in the third quarter, when the Pirates pulled away, including a pair of 3-pointers. Brianna George had a solid game at point guard as the Pirates again played without the injured Moriah Roberge.
Marshfield gets another good test Tuesday, when the Pirates visit Crescent Valley’s cross-town rival Corvallis.
“That will be a great game to at least see where we’re at,” Dunbar said.
Molly Doran led Crescent Valley with nine points.

Pirates earn road win
Marshfield ground out a 74-60 road win over South Albany on Friday in a game that lasted 21⁄2 hours and had 52 fouls between the two teams.
“I do feel good about getting out of there with a win, but it was really ugly,” said Pirates coach Jesse Ainsworth. “We play with a lot of pressure, and we’re a physical ballclub. Whenever it’s called that tight it doesn’t benefit us.”
Kyle Tedder had 27 points for Marshfield in the win, while Andrew Porter added 15 as the Pirates nursed a 10-plus point lead most of the game.
