MP runner to compete at national meet

Myrtle Point High School freshman Maegen Miranda will compete this weekend at the Junior Olympics National Cross Country Championships at Mechanicsville, Va.

Miranda qualified for nationals by finishing 13th in the youth girls division at the regional competition at Seattle on Nov. 22. The youth age group is for students born in 1994 and 1995.

Miranda was timed in 16 minutes, 17 seconds for 4,000 meters at the regional meet.

She placed fourth in the age group at the Oregon State Junior Olympics Championships on Nov. 8 at Crooked River Ranch in Central Oregon, with a time of 16:57.

Siuslaw Middle School student Mitchell Butler was 14th in the same age group at the regional meet with a time of 14:21. Mitchell had finished fifth at the state meet with a time of 14:29.

Two other Myrtle Point students also competed at the state and regional meets.

Cody Hernandez was 19th at the state meet (15:55) and 43rd at the regional meet (16:06) in the youth division.

Anthony Hernandez was 35th at the state meet in the midget boys (born in 1996 and 1997) age group at the state meet with a time of 13:43 for 3,000 meters. He finished 59th at the regional meet in 13:44.
