NEW YORK — Star defensive ends Julius Peppers and Jared Allen were fined $10,000 each Friday by the NFL, Peppers for a late hit and Allen for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Carolina’s Peppers was fined for his hit on Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers after the quarterback had gone out of bounds in the fourth quarter Sunday. Minnesota’s Allen was fined for using the football as a prop. That brings Allen’s total this year to $90,000.
Tennessee tackle David Stewart was fined $7,500 for unnecessary roughness on a running play when he struck an opponent late in a Thanksgiving Day win over Detroit.
The NFL also handed out a $5,000 fine to Vikings CB Benny Sapp for hitting a Bears player in the head; $7,500 to Bears WR Brandon Lloyd for a horse-collar tackle on Sapp after an interception; and $7,500 to Bears CB Charles Tillman for a horse-collar tackle on Bernard Berrian.

Blount faces charges
HAMILTON, Ohio — Former NBA player Corie Blount was charged with felony drug possession after authorities saw him pick up a package they knew contained marijuana, then found more marijuana at his home, the Butler County sheriff said Friday.
Deputies watched as the U.S. Postal Service delivered a package containing 11 pounds of marijuana to a Liberty Township address northwest of Cincinnati on Thursday.
When the 39-year-old Blount picked up the package, agents followed him to his home and served search warrants on the home and the address where the package was delivered, Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said.
At Blount’s home, deputies found a second 11-pound package of marijuana, and another package containing about 7 pounds of marijuana, Jones said.
Blount was charged with felony drug possession and was released on $10,090 bond. If convicted of the charge, Blount faces one to five years in prison.
Deputies confiscated a total of 29 pounds of marijuana, a 1996 Mercedes Benz, a 2004 Cadillac Escalade, a 2000 Chevrolet Sububan, three guns and $29,500 in cash, Jones said.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL
Walsh is pregnant
Two-time Olympic beach volleyball champion Kerri Walsh found something to keep her busy after winning her second straight gold medal: She’s pregnant.
Walsh and husband Casey Jennings, a fellow pro beach volleyball player, are expecting a child in the spring.
“I’m chubby and I’m pregnant and it’s awesome,” she said Wednesday in an interview with Access Hollywood and radio host Billy Bush. “I’m used to living my life in a bikini, and I’m definitely not bikini-ready. I think the chubbiness is all relative, but it’s for the very best cause in the whole wide world, is what I keep telling myself. And I’m pretty proud of it.”
Walsh and teammate Misty May-Treanor said during the Olympics that they planned to take some time off after the games to start families, a move they delayed so they can compete in Beijing and go for their second straight gold medal. May-Treanor is married to Florida Marlins catcher Matt Treanor.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Peterson staying put
JACKSON, Miss. — Boise State coach Chris Peterson said he won’t be Mississippi State’s next football coach.
Peterson denied interest in the opening left by Sylvester Croom’s resignation last Saturday. Mississippi State athletic director Greg Byrne and Peterson are longtime friends.
“We are very happy here at Boise State and look forward to our upcoming bowl game later this month,” Peterson said.
HIGH SCHOOL
Long win streak broken
JACKSON, Miss. — The nation’s longest high school football win streak is over after South Panola fell to Meridian 26-20 in overtime of the Class 5A state championship game on Friday.
The Tigers had won 89 straight games, the third longest streak in history, and five straight state titles. But James Barnett scored from 2 yards out on Meridian’s second play of overtime and Jacoby Eason sacked South Panola’s David Renfroe on fourth down on the ensuing possession to end the streak.
Maryville, Tenn., now holds the nation’s longest win streak at 74 games.
Only Concord (Calif.) De La Salle (151 games) and Charlotte (N.C.) Independence (109) have won more consecutive games than South Panola, located in Batesville, about an hour south of Memphis, Tenn. |
