North Bend’s boys basketball team won its season opener Friday, topping visiting Junction City 61-56.

Sam Lynass had 13 points and Sean Jany and Jake Lucero added 11 each for the Bulldogs.

“The first half, we were a little ragged, but we were able to do some things and score points,” said North Bend coach John Olson.

Lucero helped his teammates with good penetration and passing, while the rest of the teammates also did good things, Olson said.

“I was really pleased,” he said.

The Bulldogs lost Trae Collins to a sprained ankle. Olson wasn’t sure how long he’d be on the sidelines.

Taylor Shelley had 21 points and Aaron Likens added 10 for Junction City.

Braves edge Waldport in overtime

Cody Savey scored 40 points to lead Reedsport to a 62-60 overtime win against Waldport in the Alsea River Classic at Waldport on Friday.

Savey shot 18-for-23 from the foul line for  the Braves, who rallied to force overtime by outscoring the Irish 15-4 in the fourth quarter.

Reedsport coach James Hixenbaugh said the Braves came back with a tough press in the fourth quarter. Reedsport hadn’t applied the pressure until the second half because Sean Horton, one of the team’s leading players, was unavailable because he’s taking the SAT test today.

Adam Clark had 17 points to lead the Irish.

Vikings fall at tournament

Newport beat Siuslaw 61-44 in the other opening-round game at Waldport on Friday.

Justin Layton had 23 points and Mark Moore 15 for the Cubs.

Danny Barnum led Siuslaw with 14 points and Rivers Gage-Hunt added 10 for the Vikings.

Tigers beat Phoenix in tourney opener

Bandon pulled away from Phoenix in the fourth quarter for a 53-43 win at the Pacific Rim Tournament at Gold Beach High School.

“Offensively, we didn’t look too good, but that can be understandable since we’ve really been pushing the defense and not working too much on the offense,” said Bandon coach Matt Angove. “Defensively, we did a really good job. We were aggressive and physical and did a good job of shutting them down.”

Max DeVillers had 17 points and Connor Jackson added 11 for the Tigers. Andy Santos had four points and had eight rebounds and four steals and played tough defense on one of Phoenix’s top scorers.

Skyler Reagan and Juan Sauceda each had 11 points for Phoenix.

Illinois Valley holds off Gold Beach

Illinois Valley held off a Gold Beach rally in the fourth quarter and beat the Panthers 58-54 at the Pacific Rim Tournament.

Jeffrey Knox had 26 points and Todd Martin added 14 for the Panthers, who trimmed a 47-36 lead to just two points in the final minute, but couldn’t get over the top.

Oakers beat Red Devils

Oakland beat Coquille 52-33 in the opening round of the Douglas Tournament on Friday.

Tyler Fugate had 16 points to lead the Oakers, who pulled away by outscoring Coquille 12-2 in the second quarter.

Joseph Savala had 12 points and Daniel Muntifering nine for the Red Devils.

Cruisers fall to league foe

Umpqua Valley Christian jumped out to a 16-4 lead after the first quarter and cruised to a 73-30 win over Powers in the opening round of the Cow Creek Classic at Riddle.

Austin Stone had 18 points to lead the Monarchs, while Cameron Perreault had 11 for the Cruisers.

Marshfield JV tops Pacific

Pacific lost its season opener to Marshfield’s junior varsity team Thursday, falling 55-44.

Marshfield led 23-19 at halftime, but pulled away with tough pressure defense in the third quarter, Pacific coach Wayne Everest said.

Josh Thompson had 10 points for Marshfield, while Reed Brady had 10 for Pacific.

Everest has just two returning varsity players and is working with a new offense this season, and said the team’s struggles were expected.

“That’s what preseason’s all about,” Everest said. “Get better every game — that’s what our focus is.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Pirates fall

Marist took advantage of Marshfield’s injury and foul woes to beat the Pirates 48-37 in Eugene on Friday.

Marshfield senior Moriah Roberge could only play the opening minutes because of a tight hamstring and didn’t score, while posts Mel Stout and Natalie Caffey got in early foul trouble, leaving the team with shorter defenders Bre Jansen and Brittney Young playing inside.

“The biggest difference in the game (was) after the refs started calling fouls, our feet were nailed to the ground and we couldn’t stop their penetration,” said Marshfield coach Debbie Dunbar.

Marist shot 26 free throws to seven for the Pirates and Marist also had a 15-8 edge on offensive rebounds.

Dunbar was thrilled with the defensive play of freshman Kara Young, who was assigned to Marist’s 6-foot, 2-inch post Ally Rogers most of the night and helped limit Rogers to eight points.

Brianna George had four 3-pointers and led Marshfield with 15 points, while Stout added eight.

Macky Dennis had 13 points for the Spartans.

Tigers edge Bulldogs

Junction City rallied to force overtime and went on to beat visiting North Bend 43-39 Friday night.

“It was a good nonleague game for us to play,” said North Bend coach Mike Forrester. “They were really physical.”

The Bulldogs got in foul trouble early and Junction City capitalized, hitting 21 of 33 free throws. North Bend attempted just 11 foul shots.

Alexandra Mateski had 13 points, while Brooke Davison and Asha Mitchell had eight each.

Mateski did a good job handling pressure and leading the offense after Davison got in early foul trouble, Forrester said.

Mitchell and Taylor Weidman, who had six points, each played well in extended minutes off the bench, Forrester said.

Amber Turner had 12 points and Samantha Shipley 11 to lead the Tigers.

Panthers win

Gold Beach outscored Illinois Valley 18-0 in the second quarter and beat the Cougars 53-25 in the first round of the Pacific Rim Tournament on Friday.

Molly Hockema had 15 points and Lindsey McDonald added 12 for the Panthers, who play Phoenix today.

Hockema and Katherine Zuber each had six rebounds for the Panthers.

Laurissa Tausaga had 15 points for the Cougars.

Pirates top Tigers

Kelsey George had 24 points to lead Phoenix to a 70-39 win over Bandon in the opening round of the Pacific Rim Tournament.

Melinda Torres had 15 points for the Tigers.

Devils edge Oakers

Allison Cook scored with nine seconds to go to give Coquille a 38-37 win over Oakland at the Douglas Tournament on Friday.

Cook scored on a rebound and the Red Devils stopped the Oakers on their final possession for the win.

Courtney Davis had 11 points to lead Coquille, while Taylor McLean had 17 for the Oakers.

“It’s great to win close games,” said Coquille coach Jennifer Sproul, whose team survived a two-point third quarter.

“We were down by 10 at one point,” she said. “For us not to fold up right there, that showed a lot. We’re starting to be competitive at least.”

The Red Devils face the host Trojans today.

Irish beat Braves

Christine Herron had 23 points and Maddie Webb added 12 as host Waldport beat Reedsport 51-38 in the opening round of the Alsea River Classic on Friday.

Tailor Nunn had three 3-pointers and 18 points for the Braves, while Jessica Cooper added nine.

UVC tops Powers

Umpqua Valley Christian limited Powers to nine points in the first half and beat the Cruisers 45-26 in the opening round of the Cow Creek Classic at Riddle on Friday.

Sara Harding had 18 points to lead the Monarchs. Nicole Bittner and Liz Linderman led the Cruisers with five points each.

SWIMMING

North Bend girls win

North Bend’s girls swim team swept a double-dual with Reedsport and host Cottage Grove on Thursday.

The Bulldogs beat the Braves 132-23 and the Lions 98-72.

Rachel Heaney won the 133-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly for the Bulldogs. North Bend’s only other individual win was by Gabe Deen in the 100 backstroke, but the Bulldogs also won two of the three relays.

Cottage Grove beat North Bend’s boys 90-67, while the Bulldogs topped Reedsport 77-44.

James Vergeer won both the 200 and 500 freestyle races and Kevin Waller took the 133 individual medley and 100 butterfly for North Bend. Matt Johnson won the 100 backstroke.

Reedsport’s top finish was a second-place effort by Riley Johnson in the 66 freestyle.
