Area swimmers honored for top times

Three South Coast swimmers were honored at the recent Oregon Swimming Awards Ceremony in Portland.
The annual banquet honors swimmers who ranked in the top five in events for either the winter or summer seasons.
Kevin Waller of the South Coast Aquatic Team had top-five times in nine events in the 13-14 age group, including five first places and two state records.
Waller ranked first in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 59.42 seconds.
He also was first in the 400-meter freestyle (4:11.18), 800-meter freestyle (8:36.85), 1,500-meter freestyle (16:26.05) and 1,650-yard freestyle (16:07.96).
Waller also was second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.02), 500-yard freestyle (4:41.28) and 1,000-yard freestyle (9:35.72), and fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.79).
His state records came in the 200-meter freestyle and the 400-meter freestyle.
In addition, Waller was part of two Oregon relay teams that set national all-star relay records, in the 200-meter medley relay and 400-meter medley relay.
Waller had national top-10 times in five different events, the best sixth-place marks in the 1,500-meter freestyle and 800-meter freestyle.
Rachel Heaney, Waller’s SCAT teammate, had seven top-five times, including the best mark for her age group in the 1,500-meter freestyle (17:39.06). Her others were third in the 200-meter butterfly (2:24.74), fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.97), fifth in the 400-meter freestyle (4:34.74), fifth in the 800-meter freestyle (9:27.89), fifth in the 400-meter individual medley (5:14.22) and fifth in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:35.04).
For the Gold Coast Swim Team, Karl Stuntzner-Gibson had three top-five times in the 9-10 age group. He ranked second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:14.53), fifth in the 100-meter butterfly (1:28.10), and fourth in the 50-yard butterfly (33.76). |
