Spend locally; it will help the area

Thursday, December 04, 2008 |
We know things are rough this year around our communities. Businesses are showing declining numbers. Some are even closing their doors. Unemployment is on the rise. People are losing their homes.
As we talk about it to our friends, family and associates, the common theme we hear is “what can I do about it? I am only one person.” It seems that everyone feels like there is little they can do as individuals to change what is happening in their communities. Actually, individuals can make a difference, especially during the holiday season.
I am sure you have heard it before — shop locally. Imagine if everyone did their holiday shopping right here in North Bend, Coos Bay, Charleston — wherever you happen to live. Local businesses hire and support people who live here. Money spent for local services and in local shops in our towns, stays right here and is cycled back into our communities.
Businesses that do well and prosper, stay in business and consequently can survive these tough economic times. And when our community bands together and supports each other we all make it. That is what we can do, one individual at a time, to help.
And if you have already done your shopping this season, you can still help the community. Buy a gift or food item and donate it to the Bus Jam or Toys for Tots or a food bank of your choice. There are ways that we as individuals can make a difference. Imagine if thousands of us did that this season right here in our own towns. If it helps even one business stay afloat, or one family have a better holiday, it would be worth it!
We wish you and your families peace and joy this holiday season.
